Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Intensiver, etwas zu stark gewürziger Antrunk. Die Hefigkeit ist angenehm, fällt aber hinter den drückenden Noten zurück. Ansonsten wässrig. 13/8/7/7/9/7

330ml Bottle - Golden in colour. Yeast, apricot and grain in the aroma. Yoghurt, citrus, apricot and biscuity malt in the taste. Nothing wrong with it and has some typical trappist notes but is a bit too simplistic.

355 ml. bottle. Only lightly hazy orange, only some bubbles on the side. Nose is thick pine resin goop, thick & syrupy going to sweet almost, sugar and tea mixed in, rather malty. Taste is orange peel (low), thick amost herbal pine resin good, some herbal sweetness, some tea, low bergamot, thick syrupy resin, caramel, bit malty. Oily, low syrupy qualities, very soft carbonation making it touch vaguely almost watery. This is not going to appeal to everyone, this is a pretty old school IPA, this is out of touch with the current crazes,… A bit retro. Pretty accessible & easy drinking. I like it.

Flavor is sweet and bitter, fruits, citrus, orange peel, caramel, sugar, malt, some cucumber. Finish is caramel sugar sweet and orange zest bitter. Carbonation is on the high side, alcohol is covered by sweetness. Overall: good

75cl bottle @ Chez Sophie. Pours dark with a large tan head. Prominent caramel chocolate aroma. Taste is rich and cakey with soft caramel and dark cocoa flavours. Really quite something, and probably my favourite out of the Spencer range.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Hazy golden body with a medium white head. Lively carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of straw, crushed digestive biscuits and apricot. Flavour of banana bread, salted cracker, yeast and pear. Thin body with a watery texture. Light fizz. It’s not particularly complex, but it is very enjoyable.
