Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Crisp and hazy bronze and copper coloured body with an orange tint and a very fast-dying tan head, only a half centimetre thick. Bottle exploded upon opening then the head/foam died town fairly quickly. Seemingly not good for aging this one, so I’m glad I didn’t. Aroma of alcohol, grain, yeast, bread, light spice, dry herbs and grass and a lot of honey and banana sweetness. Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence with a large dry grain and wheat flavour with some coriander seed and herbs in the mix. Aftertaste is fairly straight forward with some dry notes, a hint of earthy malt and a light saison-y like finish with big yeast, herbs, grass and a very dry finish. Overall, a decent beer at best - I finally was able to taste this and it left me very underwhelmed - I’m happy that there is an American Trappist, but this one doesn’t do justice. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 12-July-2015 for US$4,29 sampled at home in Washington on 13-October-2015.

A big thanks to Bob for acquiring this and sharing. Gold color. Well carbonated in the Belgian style. Lots of yeast. Lightly sweet, earthy, and malt flavors. Hops are in there too. Great, light palate but also good flavor. One of the better Belgian ales to be found in the United States.
