Description
Crow Peak Brewing Company, crafting South Dakota's beer culture!
Crow Peak Brewing Company started in the spring of 2007 as a modest 5-barrel brewery with on-premise sales in the form of pints and off-premise sales in the form of 64-ounce growlers. The brewery was extremely successful, and in order to provide a quality local beer to other parts of the State and beyond, a brewery expansion was in order. The beautiful new brewery building opened for business in December of 2009.
However, our beers were still being brewed on our 5-barrel system while we were waiting for our new 30-barrel brew house – three 60-barrel fermentation vessels and 60-barrel bright beer tank to arrive and be installed. Installation of the new equipment, plumbing, wiring and boiler system was completed in June of 2010. In addition to the larger brewing system, a Cask automated canning line was brought online in the fall of 2010, allowing us to distribute our product in both draft and packaged form.
By the end of 2015, Crow Peak Brewing Company was producing 2,000 barrels of beer annually and was distributing its products in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Minnesota. We were finding it hard to keep up with demand, especially in the summer months so we underwent a second expansion in 2018. With two additional fermentation vessels and one additional bright beer tank, we are now able to produce approximately 5,000 barrels annually.

12 oz can given to me by alagnak. Pour is hazed brown with ruby notes and a one inch tan head that falls with large bubbles. The aroma is roasted, slightly char malt along with a mild grassiness. The taste is focused on the roasted malt, along with a big leafy earthy tobacco that works really well with the char nature of the malt. The grassiness joins with some mineral to create a dry flinty finish. The palate is medium bodied, un filtered mouth feel. The active carbonation and dry finish lead to really high drinkability. Really enjoyed this, thanks Chris.

can from Happy Harry’s in Grand Forks pours black with a very thin tan head. Aroma is cocoa powder, molasses and roast. Flavor is roast, thin smoke, a little fruitiness I’m guessing is coming from the yeast and a bit of bitter cocoa in the finish. Overall it’s very drinkable for a 7 percent porter but the finish is a little harsh.

Black Hills Beer Fest - Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Smooth aroma of chocolate and espresso. Very roasty taste with light bitters. Semi-dry and some sweets, but mostly roasty. Ok. **re-rate** Picked up a sixer and gave this another go. Has the good roasted malts I remember from this rating, but the chocolate malt was more prevalent and balanced out the flavor. Decent body and refreshing.

Black Hills Beer Fest - Amber pour with a big beige head. Nice aroma is a sweet blend of fruits, tropical and citrus, with caramel and toffee. Tastes sweet like the aroma, but with more emphasis on the caramel. Nice fruity presence to balance. Smooth. Really could have convinced me this was a barleywine. One of the better brews of the festival.

Black Hilsl Beer Fest - Dark copper pour with a finger of creamy tan head. Mild aroma is a pleasant mix of citrus and caramel. Tastes of light citrus and earthy bits before some plastic floral bitters take over... Doesn’t finish too well. Not what I’d expect for the category; deserves a re-rate soon.

Big thanks to markwise for finally landing me a SD rating. The can pours clear brilliant copper with white head. The aroma is mild with a mix of spicy hops, earthy hops, some grapefruit hops and a bit of sour citrus. The taste has resiny hops, spicy hops, citrus hops goodness and sweet malts coming out first. It then begins to pick up more resiny hops creating a sense of dryness across the palate along with a touch of roasted malts into the finish. Best South Dakota IPA I’ve ever had.

Bouteille partagée avec Markwise. Thanks Mark for the first South Dakota rate. Couleur cuivre, mousse fine beige. Arôme de malt/caramel et houblon, un peu herbeux et grains. Au palais, le ton est un peu citronné et malté laissant une fine amertume au fini avec des notes de pamplemousse.
