“Because without beer, things do not seem to go as well.”
In 1989, Free State Brewing Company became the first legal brewery in Kansas in over 100 years. Since opening the doors at our Mass Street HQ, we’ve been working day in and day out to be a haven for beer lovers, where good beer and good food can inspire lively conversations and memorable experiences.
Our 14-barrel brewhouse is made up of some of the best equipment available to the small brewer, but we still think the most important ingredients are the care and respect that our enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff has for each and every beer that we make. And now that we’re producing bottled beers in our expanded bottling facility, our attention to detail and dedication to great taste and quality can be experienced by people all over Kansas and Missouri.

Growler filled Thursday, drank the afternoon of the following Sunday. Pour is hazed golden yellow with a thick one inch white head. Nice full lacing left behind as the head falls. Aroma if very fresh and full hops - resin, earth, grass, some mild orange peel honey sweetness. Behind the hop is some gentle perfume and wheat. Really fresh, soft, and inviting nose. Taste leads more with grassy wheat, with the resin orange peel hop behind that. The tail end has the earthiness, and some honey bitterness. The finish is mineral, and fades pretty fast. It is also not terribly clean, tastes "brew pubby" if that makes any sense. The taste really does not have the depth and softness of the nose, but is still nice. Palate is medium bodied, mid to low carbonation. Nice one, thanks for driving this from Lawrence for me Eugene. Fun beer.

Growler courtesy of both Gregis and csbosox. Pour is clear golden copper with a nice one inch white head. Aroma of soft toasty malt, a bit of grassy hoppiness. Subdued nose, but pleasant. Taste is the lightly toasted malt, hint of sweetness, grassy earhty hops. As with the nose, clean and subdued. Palate is medium to low carbonation, quick and clean finish. Thanks for sharing this one guys.

Growler courtesy of Gregis. Pour is darker copper, mostly clear. Nice thick lacing left on the glass as the off white head falls. Aroma of marris otter malt, and some earthy, resin hops. Seems to smell like a English style Pale Ale. Taste follows the nose, the toasty malt with resin earthy hops. The hops are nice and clean. Palate is nicely carbonated, finish is clean and brief. Nicely balanced beer. Thanks for sharing Greg.

Dark amber, copper color. Its a hop beer with a lightly bitter, floral and sweet hop aroma that has a bit of a sweet malt backbone. The hops are also a bit musky. Flavor has a bit more bitterness to fight the musk. But it isn’t dry and crisp like the description explains (those are relative terms but its not as dry and crisp as I would want). Loss the musky and we got a winner.
Growler, Duvel tasting glass.

Growler filled at the brewpub by beastiefan2k, shared about 3 hours later. Pour is almost entirely clear copper brown with a one inch white head. Aroma of resin citrus, some maltiness. Aroma initally quite fresh, then fades quick. Taste is soft biscuit maltiness, with the resin citrus (orange) behind that. Palate is pretty flat, thin to medium, almost watery at the finish. Decent enough, thanks for sharing Eugene.

So I bought a growler earlier today, I was going to share it a party... well I did share it, the thing is I was the only one drinking it. So 8 hours later I am on my last glass. Its a well made pils, nothing overall spectacular but its got the right parts. Pours is a clear bland golden, has a nice head with the right pour. All around (aroma and flavor) its thick white bread malts and very strong, earthy, and bitter (for European) hops. They are very green and dry hops.. This works well with the long dry finish of the beer. So bottom line, clean white bread malts, long bitter Euro hop finish. I went through the whole growler so that says how much I like it.

growler. Pours brown with light thin off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, and was rather poor and watery. Taste, roasted malts, weak finish, almost too watery, crisp, light caramel and grains, light touch of coffee with light hints of chocolate. Not horrible but just one dimensional.

Shaker pour @ brewpub. Has a clear reddish copper color. Aroma is musky, lagered malts that are lightly sweet. Otherwise a pretty unassuming aroma. Taste is a lightly sweet maltiness and I swear I get just a hint of vomit at the very end of the flavor (I know weird). In general pretty herbal in a vegetal way and not interesting at all.

Shaker pour @ the brewpub, thought I missed this beer, good to know the new website hides things. Pour has a strong brown head on top of a very dark brown (almost black) body, looks like good stuff. Aroma is roast-y, lightly prune, and your other basic porter elements. Taste is very ashy and a watery type of ash. Its otherwise plain, really they should have called this the Thomas Plain porter, frankly I still have no idea why they named it Thomas Paine, its not like 4th of July or anything, weird. 7/4/6/3/14
Re-rate, much better and fuller flavor than the first time around. Lots of body and chewy prune and roast. Thus, I like it a lot more. 7/3/8/3/15

Pint pour @ brewpub. Color is very hazy, dark golden. The head is bubbly but not foamy. Aroma is bittered esters, a weird thing. Its a lot of pils mixed with esters. Taste has some more of that dry pils, strong. with esters subdued a bit. Finish is dry and herbal.
