Description
Mission Brewery was originally established in 1913, but like most breweries of the time, it went out of business during the first year of Prohibition. In 2007, Dan Selis, an avid homebrewer, re-established the brand and has built it into one of the top craft breweries in San Diego County.

Bottle in AZ. Pours a hazy, golden orange appearance with a very lively, white head. Spicy clove, lemon peel citrusy, light banana, apple/pear, wheat malty aroma. Fairly spicy, banana/citrus fruity, somewhat sharp wheat malty flavor with a bubbly, highly carbonated mouth feel. Not bad but the carbonation seems really high to me.

Bottle at Sander’s place, NYC. One of my last beers of this trip. Pours clear orange with a foamy, off-white head. Dry citrus aroma with notes of wood, pine and toasted straw. Lovely flavor, medium sweet, some wood and grass, pine, candi sugar, mango, grapefruit. Medium in body with average, smooth carbonation. Sticky, lightly dry finish, nice and sweet, resinous pine, toasted sugar, grass, straw, juicy orange and grapefruit, some tropical fruits. This is a damn solid IPA.

12n ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very dark brown appearing black in the glass, viscous, very-much like motor oil. Large frothy brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, nuts, coconut and a mild hop finish. The taste is big roasted malts. Chocolate, coffee, coconut, nuts, bitter hops. Full bodied, chewy texture. Slight lingering bitterness but also a lingering sweetness. Smooth with low carbonation. Nice beer.

Coffee, and burned toast. Black and headless. Mostly burned toast and char, which overpowers any molasses sweetness that it may have. Solid intensity but no nuance. Not overly warm. Decent.

Slightly hazy blonde coloured body with a very thin, hardly noticeable white head. Aroma of very fresh, very pale malt, a hint of citrus and a twang of coriander seed and a little sweetness. Light-bodied; Sharp metallic note at first with a large malt and citrus note with very little else, thin and one-dimensional. Aftertaste shows some more metallic notes, some hay and grass and not much else - pretty bland and simple. Overall, a light and uninteresting beer with not much flavour, but what flavour it does have is completely clean. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 18-November-2011 for US$3.30 sampled at home in Washington on 17-January-2012.
