Established in 2016
The Smithwick Family in partnership with direct descendants of the Sullivan Family had a vision to re-open the once-great brewery in the city where it all began. They enlisted the help of Ian Hamilton, one of Ireland’s most eminent contemporary master-brewers. Together they are bringing artisan brewing back to Kilkenny. If people thought that brewing in Kilkenny was dead and buried, they are in for a rude awakening…
Brewed at Dundalk Bay. Some small batch beers brewed in the taproom.

Pours clear deep gold with a white head. The malty aroma has some caramel and fruity character. It’s a malty brew with bread and caramel notes. There’s mild, slightly herbal hops bitterness.

Can. Dark red brown with a cm of pale beige head that lasts very well. Aroma of stewed fruit, dark sugars, bread. Malty and sweet but stays defined even before light spiced bitterness. Not really my thing but very well done.

Can from the Packie enjoyed at home.
Pours a dark brown with faint garnet at the edges and a huge frothy pillowy off white head that persists. Earthy roast and hints of chocolate. Pretty nice dry stout.

440ml can. Clear golden, big white head. Aroma of sweet bready and biscuity malts, caramel, a little marmalade. Taste has a bit more hoppiness to it than the aroma suggests, citrusy, herbal, caramel, biscuity malts, bitter finish. Medium bodied.

Very simple, soft roast, dry earth, a little milk chocolate. Drinks fine but it’s quite basic.

Can at CBJ, thanks to Cloin. Near clear brown beer, small tan head. Airy, semi dry finish, modest fine carbonation. Thin papery dark malts, a mild bitterness, thin dry finish. Nothing here that ticks any boxes.

440ml nitro can. Black pour with a dense smooth beige head. Aroma of roast malts, coffee, dark chocolate. Taste is the same, predominantly roast malt and coffee notes, dark chocolate, fruity hints, caramel, moderate bitterness. A light but very smooth body. On par with the stout you're thinking of, I'd say.
