About
Richard Ootjers, Owner of Station 1280 and Thom Morrell are about to start up Antwerp’s first craft brewery in the centre of the city.

They plan to launch Uncharted Brew Co. in Antwerp’s Oudaan area at the Winkelcentrum, a small shopping centre known locally as the “beehive” for its hexagonal pattern and which sits at the base of Antwerp’s police headquarters.

That’s where Station 1280 moved to from the city’s central railway station in October 2020. The bottle shop and taproom had outgrown the cramped quarters at Antwerpen-Centraal, Ootjers said in an interview with the Beer Idiots.

At Oudaan, Ootjers now has more space, and a terrace where drinkers can hang out and perhaps even listen to some music in the open area.

And then there is the idea for the brewery in the space next door. He joined up with Morrell, who homebrews as BRWBRD, to create Uncharted Brew Co.

4 July 2021. At Dok Brewing Festival. Shared with the lovely Anke! Hazy orange, stable, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of ripe mango, orange, melon, grapefruit, mandarin peel. Taste has sweet to bittersweet mango, orange peel & grapefruit juicy with a biscuity malty undertone, slightly zesty. Piney hoppy finish, resinous almost, grapefruity yet spicy & yeasty too. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Just a solid, classic IPA, cool.

4 July 2021. At Dok Brewing Festival. Shared with the lovely Anke! Cloudy yellow, thin, white head. Aroma of very fresh grapefruit juice, blood orange, vague rambutan, mango, smoothie. Taste has bittersweet grapefruit, blood orange, mango, bit zesty sour over a doughy malty undercurrent. Piney hoppy finish, grapefruity, juicy yet quite bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Heavy to drink almost but nice experience.

4/VII/21 - sample on tap @ DOK bierfestival (Ghent), BB: n/a (2021-583) Thanks to the GBV-crew for sharing today’s beers!

Cloudy murky yellow beige beer, small creamy irregular yellowish head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lovely, lots and lots of tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, papaya, passion fruit, very dank, lovely! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: dank hops, gentle bitterness, bit sourish, lots of hop burn, sweet touch, some oatmeal maybe? Aftertaste: tropical fruits, bit juicy, pretty bitter, resinous finish. Very decent one, like it a lot!

4/VII/21 - sample on tap @ DOK bierfestival (Ghent), BB: n/a (2021-582) Thanks to the GBV-crew for sharing today’s beers!

Clear orange beer, small creamy beige to yellowish head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: fruity, oranges, bit malty, grains, lots of (over)ripe melons, not super. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very bitter start, fruity, grapefruit, citrus touch, very resinous, dry and hoppy, some melons. Aftertaste: bit grassy, hint of diacetyl, citrus touch, bitter orange peel, very dry and bitter finish, resinous. With all those top-notch hops in the recipe, the result is a bit of a let-down.

Draught Fully muddy orange-yellow beer under a small, yellow, ultra dense & fine head. Citrus nose, fresh, orange and grapefruit. Very, very faint caramel and a rosemary aroma. Very yeasty, both in taste as in feel, with a resiny-bitter orange character; bananapeel. Almost chewy, light-spritzy carbonation. My idea: this might have turned out way better, if the beer had been given time to ripen. This feels unfinished, rather than flawed.

Draught Thick, very dense & fine yellow-ish head over ochre-amber, slightly veiled beer; rings of lace. Intense orange/orangepeel nose zith quite some resins. Fresh and inviting. Resiny, bitter orange/kumquat. A slight aromatic flavour as from benzenering, as in real sake. Sucade. Clear hopoil slickness, rather low carbonation, light to medium bodied. Outright bitterness, resiny, as a W-C IPA ought to be. For a first turnout, cudo's!!
