Description
Set in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia, Blue Mountain opened in 2007 as the region’s first rural brewery. Founders Taylor and Mandi Smack and Matt Nucci had a vision to bring the brewery experience out of the normal hustle and bustle of an urban environment. Today, we’re still focused on making an inspired range of the highest-quality beers that can be enjoyed at our two locations in beautiful Nelson County, or in bottles and cans throughout Virginia and beyond.

Batch 8: Oak and bourbon aroma, with the oak more prominent. Black pour, thick lucious brown head. Quite pronounced bourbon flavor, but palatable, with a charred oak finish. Nicely done and would be rated higher if I like bourbon.

Batch 3 thanks to Secret Santa. Shared at the Bruery. Pours with a black body and a somewhat minimal tan head. Aroma is strongly bourbon, licorice, wood, vanilla. Taste is woodsy, like attic, wood, bourbon, licorice and fudge. Big mouthfeel, very syrupy. Nice, but it looked like the cork was getting a bit corked (retaining liquid in its mass). I am glad I opened it now.

Nice deep dark brown coloured body with a slight muddy ruby glow and almost no head at all. Aroma of bright malt, smoked peat (light), earth, caramel, raisins, pitted fruits, juniper berries and a touch of bananas and yeast. Medium-bodied; Assertive malt up front then showing a lot of hops and a good amount of nuts and fruits - very complex and showing quite a bit of character. Aftertaste shows some bread and yeast, with a touch of bananas and maybe a touch of oxidization and some metal. Overall, a very nice beer and very nice to try - especially since I haven’t seen these before! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 16-April-2010, sampled at home in Washington after the Fourth of July Celebration in 2010.

Growler from the brewpub. Rated on 4/22/10. At near 11% this is going to be quite an endeavor, but first appearances make it seem as though it’s going to be a good one. Pours a hazy golden color with a medium sized creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Very nice looking beer. Aroma of bread and caramel with a lot of fairly assertive fruity notes, including pineapple, banana, mango. Also a peppery note and some vinous alcohol notes. The taste is primarily fruity with pineapple, mango, strawberry and banana with fairly strong hops, bread, yeast and alcohol. Medium-full bodied. This is a nice treat. Well done.
