The third and so far most recent addition to the Confluent range, a series of craft beers brewed at Valduc by a client brewer in Floriffoux in the Namur province of Belgium. Mocha-beige, shred-lacing, uneven-bubbled, coarse and breaking head on a very dark chocolate brown beer, almost black with misty red wine edges. Aroma of burnt toast, roasted walnuts, black peppercorns, hard caramel but without the sweetness, dry leather, black olive, nutmeg, hints of sweeter toffee and liquorice in the background. Dryish onset with aspects of burnt raisin and dried fig, medium carbonated; slick, bit oily body, toasted brown-bready and walnutty maltiness with growing roastiness in the end, chicory-like and enhanced by long, leafy hop bitterness; spicy hints of thyme and liquorice trail behind. Like most European interpretations of black IPA (a style which has dramatically declined in its home country, alas), this one focuses too much on sheer bitterness and roastiness and not enough on aromatic hoppiness, thereby creating something that is not enough IPA and could just as well pass for a dry stout. That said, and even if this one needs a bit more hops and some 'oomph' in general, it is certainly not bad for a first attempt at this style, which in my view is very hard to balance; it still confirms my belief that this Confluent project is as promising as it is ambitious, and I will certainly keep following it.

Porter by this progressive new microbrewer, aiming at postmodern Anglo-Saxon craft beer rather than reiterating old Belgian clichés. Thick and foamy, mocha-beige, cobweb-lacing head, thick and pillowy at first but quickly dissipating, very dark chocolate brown robe with thin, hazy, wine red edge - as good as black, in all. Aroma of old walnut shells, unsugared black chocolate, burnt raisins, dry tree leaves, old coffee powder, bayleaf, nutmeg, wet leather, cigarillos, minerals, old jute bags. Dryish onset, some dried fig and burnt currant, softish carb but still adding a minerally undertone; smooth, slick body, walnutty and burnt-toasty, dry and much more bitter than sweet, though a dried prune sweetishness does persist in the end, when the toasted malt bitterness becomes dominant. The latter is accentuated by a peppery hop bitterness, adorned with nutmeg- and bayleaf-like spicy accents; the underlying minerality keeps things fresh and almost 'juicy' in a way. Easygoing brown porter with dry stout-like features, quite old school for its style, but all the more enjoyable for it. My kind of porter.

Yet another new Walloon contract brewer, brewing apparently 'postmodern' craft style beers at Valduc. Very thick, foamy, creamy, egg-white, dense, membrane-lacing head on a misty peach blonde beer with orangey tinge. Aroma of dried orange peel, jute rope, light pineapple, grapefruit pith, melon, green kiwi, fresh lemonbalm leaves, old bread crust, nutmeg. Sweetish, fruity onset, peach and pineapple, medium carbonation with minerally side effects; smooth, biscuity and rusk-like maltiness, ending with quite aromatic hoppiness, reminding of orange, melon and a bit of green mango, lightly 'juicy' even, while remaining relatively soft in actual bitterness even if the hops still add a drying effect. Some phenolic and bready yeastiness does appear, but for a Belgian attempt at APA, the whole remains elegant, clean and focused, with more hop aromatics than raw bitterness - this is therefore a successful American style pale ale in my book. Interesting find, indeed a brewing company to follow in the future...
