Description
Founded in 1995, The Grainstore Brewery was formed through the collaboration of two friends, Tony Davis formally Head Brewer and Production Director at Ruddles Brewery and Mike Davies of Davro Fabrication. With Tony’s 30 years of brewing experience behind them, and Mike’s engineering and steel fabrication expertise at their disposal, the two set to work on a derelict Victorian grain store situated next to Oakham Railway Station. Following renovation of the building and the lowering into position of the large fermenting vessels, copper and conditioning tanks, the brewery tap opened its doors in September 1995. The 15 barrel brew house plant with its capacity to brew 60 barrels per week, started brewing its first brew, ‘Cooking Bitter’ a few months later. This tradition has since been continued by Tony’s son William Davis and his business partner Peter Atkinson, as the brewery and Tap go from strength to strength.

Cask at The Corn Exchange (JDW) in Leicester. Dark with a bubbly head. Has a small sweet berry aroma, little in taste but its mild texture makes it drinkable.

Cask at GBBF. It pours golden yellow-amber, with a thin white head. The nose is wood, leather, leaf and farmyard. The taste is leaf, wood, leather, light caramel, varnish, dust and lemon pith, with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not bad, but nothing special.

Hand pulled pint in my local ’Spoons’ on 13th Aug 2012. Clear and clean amber body with a creamy head that produced some good, strong lacing on my UK pint sleeve glass. No great aromas, mix of caramel maltiness and some floral hops: the taste followed those traits with the hops coming to the fore as the mouth dried. This was one of the smoothest cask ales I’ve had for a long time: could have been a nitro-keg cream flow beer (is this a good thing or a bad thing?). I had this at the brewery years ago, but don’t remember it being a smooth/slick tasting brew.

500ml bottle - a decent pour with a deep black body with a white lacy head. Aroma is feint chocolate, a bit nutty, maybe a bit of black treacle. First taste is thin, nothing too flash, a bit coffee a bit smoky - not that special. The bottle suggests serve chilled, but it loses quite a bit of character in the fridge.
