Cask at Beacon Hotel. Opaque amber. Thin foamy white head. Aroma has caramel and light spice with some herbs. More sweetness follows. Light. Thin. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Pleasent if unexciting.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe. Pours a slightly greenish pale straw with a small scummy off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly floral hops plus some crab apples. In the mouth it is sweet and juicy but with a little bitterness too. Flavour has malts, floral hops and some lemon. After a while citrus comes through and gradually builds, plus some hints of grapefruit. Finish is slightly dry. It’s reasonable – no great shakes.
