150ml, sample tray at Valmiermuiža Alus Tirgotava. Deep rustic-brown body appearance, off-white head, spotty lacing. Roasted dark bread on the nose, inviting. Bread like malts to the taste profile joined by a touch of mid-sweet caramel. Mid-sweet malty finish. Just alright. (Riga, 09.11.2025).

From tap at Alus Muiža, Rīga. Rather sweet with lots of caramel malt, butterscotch, some nutty notes. Light bitterness. Bit too buttery but has a rustic character. Too sweet, interesting to try...

On tap at O’Paps, Riga Another Latvian beer I’ve been drinking for years, but only just got around to rating. Brengulu was once the “holy grail” of Latvian breweries being virtually impossible to find, but now it is widely available. Has a sweet vanillaish aroma, and pours a hazy yellowish orange with virtually no head. Sweetness is dominant in the taste, with honey and butterscotch featuring. There are also hints of hops and caramel with very little carbonation. For me the quinressential Latvian beer (flat and sweet). Thats why I like it, but I can see why others wouldn’t.
