Description

Saison hopped with New World (including New Zealand) hops, from a new microbrewery in the Namur province filling all their beers in cans - clearly these guys have opted for a more globally oriented 'craft' approach from the start. Very thick and foamy, snow white, thickly plaster-like lacing, pillowy head sustained by a whirlwind of sparkling rushing upwards through a deep and pure 'metallic' yellow golden beer with almost greenish tinge, near clear initially but more hazed further on. Aroma of green banana, apple peel, withering dill, old lemon zest, gari, dry straw, raw parsnip, wormwood, dandelion, moist white pepper, green onion, raw leek, white bread dough. Crisp onset, sourish touch under restrained sweetishness, some green apple, unripe banana and unripe apricot, minerally effervescence effects adding 'fraîcheur', supple body; grainy, white-bready, dryish pale maltiness, quickly bittered by a rooty, wormwoody, spicy hoppiness, bringing retronasal aromas of dandelion, mugwort and dried grapefruit peel, even touches of leek and dill, but omitting the bright citrusy or tropical effects one would expect based on the hop formula. Ends long, dry, bitter-rooty and spicy with some bready and peppery yeast effects, but remains generally clean and focused. In all, still a very Belgian and traditional saison of sorts, or rather a hoppy blonde - but indeed no Belgian IPA as the brewer states. Nothing too spectacular, but technically flawless, crisp, refreshing and tasty enough - a good start for me to find out more about this Babeleir range.
