In 1872, Jules Vanneste bought the ‘t Hamerken distillery. In 1889, he took the step of definitively converting the distillery into a brewery. Soon, ‘t Hamerken top-fermentation beers became a household name in the Bruges area. Brewing continued till 1982.
In 1983, Paul Vanneste (great-grandson of the founder) founded the new De Gouden Boom brewery in collaboration with Frank Boon Brewery from Lembeek. In 1985 Brouwerij De Gouden Boom is granted a licence to brew the STEENBRUGGE abbey beers.
On 16 November 2001, PALM brewery acquired a majority interest in Brouwerij De Gouden Boom and in 2003 it was completely taken over by Palm Brewery. In the same year the Prior of St Peter’s Abbey in Steenbrugge licensed PALM Breweries to brew STEENBRUGGE abbey beers.
Since 2004 production of Bruges beers has been relocated to the PALM Breweries site in Steenhuffel.

Draught@Gastropub Nordic, Tampere. Hazy yellow colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is quite dishwatery along with some spices. Flavour is wheat, spices, coriander and some rather sweet candyish notes. Wellbalanced and refreshing as for the flavour.

What? Rated this more than 2 years ago. Have my rating been deleated? 33cl bottle. Golden/amber with a large egg white head. Lots of fruit & yeast with a lightly spiced undertone. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. Very quaffable tripel from De Gouden Boom now owned by palm!

06/04 0.33 l bottle at Hopdevil, Zagreb. Poured clear golden body with medium white head. Fruity aroma, orange, lemon, some malty characters like caramel and some spices. Flavor good, too, quite bitter, mostly dominated by orange and other fruits and spices, a bit alcoholic, but not really full bodied. Although very pleasant, could be more complex to hide alcohol content. Finish is very nice long bittersweet extracting the best things from the flavor. Very good beer, an OK tripel, could be better for what it is, but fine.

0.33 l bottle at Hopdevil, Zagreb. Really strange this is not widely distributed, probably it’s only the new beer. Poured clean body with medium head. Yeasty and sweetish malty aroma, typical for the style, banana, some slight orange notes, spiced with some herbs like coriander. Tasty and nice flavor, sweetish and slightly bitterish, fruity from yeast, although not really full bodied. Medium long and pleasant sweetish finish.
Ehm...this is perfectly fine for me :) allright, may lack some body just a bit, but it’s more than a good beer.

06/04 0.33 l bottle at Hopdevil, Zagreb. Poured clear darker red body with quite small brownish head. Relatively sweet aroma, yeasty with mostly dark fruits and some caramel or chocolate. Fine, but very faint. Flavor is on the other hand more sourish than sweet, with fermented grapes dominating. Pretty thin bodied brew. Some chocolate in finish round the whole thing quite well, although finish itself is very weak and short. Or I really can’t appreciate dubbels, except some great examples, or this is pretty boring.

05/04 0.33 l bottle from Hopdevil, Zagreb. Poured hazy pale yellow body with medium white head. Very weak aroma, some yeast, but really nothing. Flavor quite empty, very watery, soursweet with some fruitiness. All this could end only with very short and pretty tasteless finish. This is perfectly fine brew, nothing unpleasant except is way too watered down.
