Cask at the Craven Arms; dark brown pour with a thick creamy tan head, red fruit malt aroma, taste has some earthy malt action, light hop, not the most roastiest of porters, quite a creamy mouthfeel.

Cask-conditioned at the Shakespeare, Sheffield, 2/12/2014. Copper coloured with a slight, off-white, head. Easy drinking, with a touch of citrus fruit, some leafy hops, chewy mlats and a decent, bitter, finish. Fine.

500ml bottle from Mitchell’s Wines - Meadowhead - Pure black, very little head. Nose is vinous and a bit vinegary. There is the usual aroma of smokiness, but this is washed out by an acidity that really shouldn’t be there. Taste is similar, rather red wine-like for mine, nothing that endears me as a good stout. Meh! Oh, and it is as thin as fook.

Cask at Steel City Beer Festival 2014 at Kelham Island - Last one of the night, deep black body, hints of a reddish hue, thin beige top. Nose is all about the chilli, lots of spiciness overwhelming a roasted malts and burnt cocoa bean aroma. Taste is sweet, yet dry, with chocolate taking the front, with a chilli warmth at the end not that unwelcome. But where is the cherry? Oh, hang on - there it is. Right in the last sip.

Gravity dispense at Craft 100, CBC Clapham, 18/09/14. Light black with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is light coffee, roast malt, hint lactic, spice, earthy. Taste comprises earthy cocoa, light coffee grinds, faint roast, background hop notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying earthy close - a little watery and thin. So so.

On cask @ the Guildford Arms. Appearance - deep amber into brown. Nice head. Nose - toffee and biscuits. Taste - dominated by biscuits, some toffee and also some astringent malt. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet drying texture in the middle section and a dry, but slightly astringent finish. Overall - so so!

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wine Merchant’s, Sheffield. Murky gold. Barely a head. Not a looker. Juicy malt. Sweet orange. Orange zest. Some grapefruit. Hint of fust. Taste is pithy bitter. Hint of sweet on the lips. Dry, crisp palate. Long, light, grapefruit bitter finish. Very nice session beer.
