Description
BOB's Brewery (est. 1997) is the first microbrewery to open in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. For over 20 years, the brewing philosophy at BOB's Brewery has remained grounded in a small set of core values: quality ingredients, time-honored brewing techniques, small-batch beers and nuanced flavor profiles. “Brewer John” Svoboda helms brewing operations at the brewery. A high school science teacher turned brewmaster, Brewer John is the "Walter White" of the West Michigan brewing scene. John has a passion for traditional German beer styles and a talent for creating unique one-offs. The relatively small footprint of BOB’s Brewery allows John the opportunity to take some risks. With risk comes reward in the form of outstanding beer like Peanut Butter Porter, Tiramisu Stout and Hoptics Gosé, to name a few. The folks at BOB's Brewery don't have to worry about serving beer to the entire world. Our focus remains on serving one beer at a time… Yours.

Draft at the 2012 Michigan Brewer’s Guild Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Meaty peanut butter nose and body; dry porter. Mostly peanut butter but quite tasty.

6th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. I forgot about this old rating. Deep ruddy body, medium to thin cream head. Sickening nose, just brutally tannic with bourbon. Pure oak and bourbon body. Where’s the beer? Damn, this was brutal.

6th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Ruddy red body, thin to medium cream head. Sickeningly tannic bourbon nose and body, like sucking on an oak barrel. I failed to redeem any actual beer characteristics beneath the bitter, acrid, ridiculous oak. WTF?

6th Annual MBG Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Dark brown body, medium cream head. Rich, meaty nose and body with roasted malts and sweet, creamy peanuts. Dangerously drinkable and weirdly delicious.

On tap at MBG Summer Festival. Poured bright gold with a white head. Aroma was unpleasantly dominated by the Chipotle notes, which did not combine well at all with the undertone of mango. It was painful for me to smell the beer. The same goes for the flavor which transitioned from very sweet mango to spicy chipotle. I hate to say this but a bad unbalanced beer imo.

On tap at the BOB. This was my favorite beer of the evening, surprisingly smooth and silky with a nice chocolatey body. Notes of coffee and soft roasted malts, lacking the ruinous acidity that plagues lesser stouts, provided a nice complement. I didn’t pick up the high alcohol content. An enjoyable, quaffable, acceptably complex stout.

On tap as B.O.B. Happy Pils. This was a light, bready pilsener with more malt depth than I expected, pairing grassy, snappy hops with sweet, bready malt and a hint of light fruit. It’s interesting that the previous reviewer mentions not picking up Saaz hops, as I didn’t pick up a significant contribution of this classic Pilsener standard, either. That’s not to say the hops weren’t used, but this was a bit unusual.

On tap at the BOB. Light golden body, thin/medium off-white head. Rather nondescript aroma and flavor of bitter, lightly citric hops, with a light toasty, biscuity malt body. Thin-bodied. Not a terrible beer, but certainly a hackneyed attempt. Still, it’s neat to have a microbrewery designed to serve a variety of restaurants and clientele in one building with local beers.
