It started with two mates and a couple of beers on the sandunes of Moreton Island, Queensland. Looking back over the bay towards Brisbane, a Green Beacon was spotted, an idea then sprouted, and Brisbane’s first craft brewery was born. The doors to Green Beacon’s Teneriffe brewery were opened on the Australia Day weekend of 2013.

(Can) Pours hazy golden with small loose white head. Nice refreshing fruity aroma - papaya, citrus - and pine. Light bodied with plenty of carbonation although perhaps a bit fizzy. Taste is a bit disappointing in that it’s rather weak. The flavours are fine with nice resfreshing fruitiness, some subtle malt and hoppy bitterness, but it seems watered down. Easy drinking but too restrained.

Pint on tap at Glasshouse Bar, Brisbane Airport. Hazy amber beer with a thin white head. Nose is dry fruit and hops. Good lacing. Quite sharp and bitter. Some malt background gives balance. Finish is lingering with lots of pepper and bitterness. Very nice, goes down easy.

From a 375ml can on 12/8/2019 (can say Helen Street Haze, ABV 6.2% not 4.7%). Surprisingly pours a fairly clear light golden with a medium head. The aroma features a little citrus fruit and not much else. Tastes of muted fruit sweetness with a very gentle bitterness at the back. Light bodied with average carbonation. You'd never guess it was 6.2% - presents much like a session version. Inoffensive and a touch dull.

From a 375ml can on 27/7/2019. Suspect this version of Uppercut should have a separate entry. My can has no reference to 'Round 5', is 8%, and is described as a DDH IIPA. Pours a clear medium godlen with a medium head. The nose is fairly muted with juts a bit of pine and resin. Reasonably sweet and fruit forward up front, with citrus the primary feature, with some mild biscuit malt in the mix. The hops are big and resiny, but somehow fail to mesh together with the rest of the beer. Full bodied with average carbonation. A touch rough and disappointing.

* Fathom Barrel Aged Beers seems to be a Green Beacon offshoot label. * BA Sour brown ale from Qld, what a time to be alive. * Hi Opal. :( Can. Very dark brown with a beige head that fades to a scant coat. Aroma of yeasty dough, dark Chinese vinegar. Fairly light bodied, moderate carbonation. Moderately sour with gentle acidity, stewed dark fruit and berries. Nice peppery oak brings things together at the end. Good, respectful, promising.

Can. Black with a tan head that retreats to a coat. Aroma of chocolate some brioche, licorice. Medium bodied. Roast and firm bitterness meet the richness almost too well. Nice weight.

Can, 8%. Just labelled Uppercut. Canned 8 April. Gold with a small white head. Grapefruit, some berries, pineapple, pine. Barely medium bodied. Quite sweet with more tropical fruit than evident in the aroma. Flutters of resin and alcohol. Dry with fairly high bitterness at the end.
