Description
Otherlands Beer is our funny little family-owned brewery & cafe nestled into the Sunnyland neighborhood of Bellingham, Washington. While we originally conceived of our pub as a cottage in the woods called “Chickens As Friends” that brewed one beer and served food exclusively from our garden, we decided that a cozy 50-seat cafe was a bit more reasonable.

Dreamt up and founded by two brewing and service industry veterans, Karolina Lobrow & Ben Howe, Otherlands Beer is a celebration of easy drinking beer, thoughtful food, and warm hospitality.

At the cafe you’ll find our modest selection of unfiltered lagers, farmhouse ales, and modern American pale ales served fresh from the tap and gravity cask and paired with old-world inspired meals and snacks from our humble kitchen. We invite you to come explore Otherlands with us.

Dark brown, with a thin head. Toffeeish sort of malt sugar nose. Soft body. The sugars aren't quite as big on the palate, and this allows some juiciness to come through that makes it more drinkable. Solid effort.

On tap at The Magnet, pours a dark amber brown with a small beige head. Aroma has a nice dry caramel malt base, bready notes, and dark red fruits. Flavour has a bready caramel malt, some red fruits, and gentle earthiness. Nice malty character, finishing bready. Good stuff.

4oz pour at The Magnet. Pours murky amber with a pale beige head. Malty sourdough on the nose. Flavour has amber malts, a bit of rye bread. There's a slight sourness here that's not really working for me.

4oz pour at The Magnet. Pours black with a beige head. Dialed back toasted malts on the nose. Flavour has pumpernickel malts. Not super interesting, but seems well made.

On tap at Otherlands, pours a closure dark orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma has moderately fermented out candi sugar, toasted caramel, bready malt, and a hint of esters. Flavour is like a spicy Xmas saison, with Christmas spices, rustic saison yeast, and lightly sweet bready malt. Real nice spiciness to this, with the alcohol kept in check. Surprisingly excellent.

On tap at Otherlands, pours a red-tinged deep dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out toasted bready malt and a touch of earthy nuttiness. Flavour is very dry, with lots of crusty bready malt, some toasted nuts, and light earthiness. Really good malt expresion, with minimal residual sweetness. Bang on for the style.

Bottle poured. Always looking forward to the next lager from these guys. This style always catches my eye as well. Thick, cloudy golden orange pour. Rocky head that fades. Sweet bready grains here. Like, surprisingly sweet, and I don't really know why. Bready aroma with some orange zest and a gentle floral. Palate lingers with a rich wort. Really odd miss here for me. Some good things going for it, but had a tough time slugging this one down all things considered.

Draft pour at Otherlands, Bellingham. Rating from backlog. Juicy appearance, bright golden orange pour with a thin head. Solid hefe here that definitely tastes true to the style, and less like an American wheat beer. Refreshing to see, and easy to enjoy. Some slight bubblegum notes, rich with banana, and spicy / bready grains. Late palate wheat note. Delicious.
