Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.
We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.
In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

Pours coppery brown with almost no head.Nose shows wild untreated honey and little else. Maybe some musty notes too I suppose. Some of the honey is present as a flavour too, along with the musty character. Some alcohol is there, but it’s kept well-integrated. A faint white wine character shows through too.Needs more carbonation. Not sure I’d want this again but worth trying.

Bottle, 13C. Clear gold with a modest white head. Aroma is fruity and earthy with pears, apricots, caramel, orange blossoms and light spices. Bittersweet with fruit, golden raisins and caramel, firm bitterness with some oranges and spices. Very smooth mouthfeel. Luscious, comes across as stronger than 7%. If I had another I’d be inclined to sit on it a couple of years.

I was looking for a late night palate cleanser in some trendy Fitzroy North bar full of young people when I came across this curious offering - hoppy amber. I’m not a huge amber fan, so it was a slight risk but the reward turned out to be worth it. There’s loads of hops packed into this little bottle, with tons of citrus and floral notes, plus some really solid malt underneath. The profile is the same in the mouth - a really pleasant IPA-amber hybrid with lots of body provided by the malt.

Bottle, 13C. Dark brown, no head. Aroma of dark malt, spiced sour apples, shrivelling grapes. Interesting and weirdly enticing, but also a little like some sort of protective treatment for timber. Very low carbonation. Vaguely slippery mouthfeel. Quite sour and herbal but has a chocolate and dark berry sweetness to it. Less confronting than Canute the Gruit. The sediment looked a bit scary so I left it in the bottle, but even so it’s surprising how clean it is. Again it’s the balance of the interesting things that’s impressive.

Pours syrup-like, orange in hue, with absolutely no head.Nose shows sultanas, honey (mead-like), fruit cake and accompanying spicy and golden syrup. Actually quite enticing.Slightly sour flavours, but with sultanas in the background along with a white wine note. Pretty weird.Thick body, really needs some carbonation.

Bottle, 13C. Orval glass :) Hazy gold with a dense white head that lasts and coats the glass. Aroma is bretty with apples, nectarines, lemon rind, peppery spices. Lowish carbonation (would have liked a little more), creamy. Taste is fruity with apricots, nectarines, oranges, mild funk. Spices creep up to be quite tingly and a good few seconds after a sip it gets around to finish dry. Be interesting to see how it ages, but I only bought two and I’m going to have the other one right now. Absolutely astonishing.

Bottle, 13C. Clear copper with a coat of off-white head. Aroma of dark, sappy honey, earthy yeast, spices. Full-bodied but not syrupy, with lowish carbonation. Powerful honey taste that’s less sweet than it first seems - some singed toffee too - fading into spices, wood and slight astringency. No overt alcohol. Finish goes on forever. Rustic but very well balanced.

Pours dark brown with no head whatsoever, although a bit of syrupy sediment sees to have collected at the bottom of my glass...Nose shows acidic dark berries, soft roasted malt, chocolate and spices/herb contributing a Dr Pepper note. Weird but somehow enticing.Somewhat akin to a Flanders Red.Very sour flavours, almost mouth-puckering. Some of the roasted malt shows but nothing else really makes an impression through the acidic assault.Very low carbonation. Almost seems watery.Bit of an experiment I suppose, and interesting, but not something I plan on drinking again - once is definitely enough.

Bottle, 11C. Dark brown with a small beige head that quickly retreats to the rim. Mocha aroma with fudge, earth and grass. Only slightly sweet with a pleasing balance of coffee and chocolate, light singed malt, earthy with balancing bitterness. Medium bodied, lightening carbonation. Good stuff.

Pours deep copper with a large, lasting creamy head.Nose shows doughy notes, lots of rich sweet honey, and soft bready and nutty malt. Quite tempting.More honey as a flavour, along with the accompanying woody/grainy notes you often get in a beer including honey. The alcohol shows, but is just shy of being harsh. Nowhere near as sweet or malty as I would expect for a beer to carry these flavours and alcohol.Likewise, could use a more syrupy body.
