Cask handpull at The Market Porter. Pale gold, lasting white head. Bit soapy to start with but I love the hop sting as it kicks in. Nice.

Cask at the Wenlock Arms, london on 15th October 2009. Handsomely black with a creamy white head. Smoky aroma then exquisite and intense blend of bitter roasted malts. Creamy texture throuhg which the smokiness penetrates creating a multi-directional experience with this porter. A superb, first-class ale fully deserving of a high mark - recommended. No disrespect to any of the previous raters but all the 2’s and 3’s below refer to the bottled version - DO try the cask you will not be disappointed!

Bottle. Deep black with reddish hue with no head. Porter burnt aroma. Medium body and carbonation. The flavour is pretty standard porter with an unpronounced foretaste, pehaps mildly tangy, with dark roast malt, almost burnt and a little sour. A reasonable Porter, which is not my favourite style.

Cask gravity at Oxford Beer Festival, 15-10-09 Pours gold in colour with white head. The aroma is really quite unusual touch rustic. I certainly get the cats piss that the previous rater mentions. Nice sweet grapefruit in the mouth the bitterness comes through but its kept in check by a nice sweety maltiness. Pleasant beer that was quite popular at this end of the bar. A5 A4 F7 P4 Ov14 3.4

From cask at the Market Porter. Pours clear and golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is nice peachy and light citrusy hops fruity. Crisp and dry bitterness. Dry peach fruity note too. Smooth hops fruity and bitter into a dry finish.

500ml bottle from the Sainsbury beer competition. Although it has a slight liquorice tang which I don’t normally go for this is a very drinkable beer. Yes a liquorishy dark beer. Some warm malts. As this isn’t my normal favourite flavour it wins me over in its fullness in the mouth and the coffee and choc. Ok

500ml bottle from Sainsburys. Deep tawny brown with a dense tan head; malt and coffee aroma; some sweet, milky, chocolate flavours; with a toasted malt finish. Pleasant.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Pours black with a brown creamy head that disappears after a short while. The aroma is of lightly roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. Flavours of caramel, chocolate, slight hops. Sweet, gently bitter finish.

(Cask at King’s Arms, Salford, 23 July 2009) Yellow colour with brief, white head. Fruity nose with citrus, grass and hay. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of grass, citrus, lemon and a hoppy, zesty finish. Rather light body, but with a fresh hop character. Decent.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Deep Mahogany with ruby hints and a short-lived tan head. Light roasty aroma with some chocolate. Sweetish, caramel flavour with some rostiness and a dry finish with a touch of sourness. This bottled version wasn’t so good.
