Description
In 2010, David and Andy were looking down the barrel of economic downsizing in their industry. Looking at it as an opportunity instead of a problem, the two set out to take their basement hobby to a new level. The dream of all home-brewers; to go "legit" and open a commercial brewery, presented itself as a once in a lifetime opportunity. The two agreed upon a Nano Brewery (1 BBL brewhouse). Although they were hopeful it would be well received, they had no idea the amount of interest the locals had for craft beers. Along the way they found and hired on some awesome people to bring the brewery altogether. Blackrocks still brews beer at the original pub on 3rd St, as well as a 20 BBL production system in Marquette. two key ideas fuel Blackrocks on a day to day basis, always make the best beer possible and always have fun while doing it.

12 ounce can from Brennan's Cellars, 5/11/19. Purchased 5/3/19 and best by 4/17/19. I will be downgrading that place rating to refect out of date beer being sold in a moment. Black, medium foamy brown head, good retention. Aroma of roast and coffee. Taste is roast, coffee, chocolate. Medium bodied, simple but well executed. Nice beer despite being past its peak.

Tap at Chiefs. Filtered pale tan body. Steady, respectable, white head. Solid Pale Ale, pleasant hop depth, a lot going on there... but maybe simcoe and Mosaic shining the most. Still had malt tones, all around nice balance. Classic. Good.

The Aromas are Wet cardboard, oxidized cops, and a little pale malt. Flavors are like nose, balanced Bittersweet, good carbonation but the old hops get in the way. Slightly bitter finish and decent body.

The Aromas are metallic, minerals, roast and a hint of coconut. Very Mild flavors that are similar to nose coconut comes on a touch stronger. Brisk carbonation that doesn't help. OK beer.

The Aromas are fairly basic, resin Hops and toffee malt. The flavors are substantially different lots of burnt sugar pale malt bittersweet almost more towards the British Style IPA not a lot of hop flavor. Decent body in Finnish. Drinkable but now what I think of for an IPA.

12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 12/10/2018. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red/orange/copper color, with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, apricot, red apple, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, molasses, roasted nuts, chocolate, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Very minimal diacetyl. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready, fruity yeast, rum/bourbon/rye barrels, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, date, apricot, red apple, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, molasses, roasted nuts, chocolate, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and rum, bourbon, rye whiskey, oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, rum, bourbon, spicy rye whiskey, toasted oak, dark fruit, cherry, apricot, red apple, brown bread/crust, coconut, roasted nuts, molasses, light licorice/chocolate/smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready, fruity yeast, rum/bourbon/rye barrels, and light earthy hop flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness and rum/bourbon/rye/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying sweetness, or astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and rum/bourbon/rye/oak spiciness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild increasing warmth of 11%, with minimal barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic mixed barrel aged scotch ale! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready, fruity yeast, rum/bourbon/rye barrels, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Definitely a big improvement over the base beer, of which I am a big fan. A lot richer on flavors. Perfectly balanced rich malts, fruity yeast, and bourbon/rum/rye barrel presence/integration; with solid earthy hop presence against sweetness. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazingly spot on style example.
