Description
In Michigan, we have a knack for being creative in less-than-ideal situations. Take Wolverine State Brewing Co., for example. Matt Roy and Trevor Thrall, WSBC’s founders, took a bad snowstorm, a Jeep, and a northbound route on I-75 and turned it into Michigan’s only lager-focused microbrewery.
The snowstorm delayed their trip for several hours, and, to kill the time, they started talking about the huge amount of beer they had stuffed in their cooler for their guys’ weekend. They had microbrews from all over Michigan, imports from Europe, St. Louis, and Milwaukee…
But, as they talked, they realized something was missing: a regular Michigan beer — a kickass, easily-approachable beer that all Michiganders could rejoice over. They spent the remaining hours wishing for such a thing to exist before realizing that they could either keep complaining, or they could do it themselves. And that’s how the idea for Wolverine Premium Lager, our flagship brew, was born.
A few years and a few additions later, we’re operating as the first and only all-lager microbrewery in the state of Michigan. We’re constantly pushing the envelope with what a lager can do -- we experiment with combined cultures, high-gravity lagers, and best-quality ingredients for the most balanced, unique, and innovative beers possible. Our Brewmaster, Oliver, along with brewer Karl and cellarmen Rick and Brandon, spend every day fanatically creating, caring for, and bottling each and every lager. We hope you love drinking it as much as we love making it!

Sold to new ownership in 2025, with the taproom closed, but plans to continue production and distribution of the brand.

Sampled from the tap at the brewery. Pours a clear gold with a straw hue and a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of grass with a touch of pine and a hay backbone. Flavor has dank pine and light onion with grass and hay notes in the finish.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear gold with an orange hue and a white head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has pine and resin that is cut by a sweet tangerine note. Flavor has a bit of sweet tangerine but becomes bitter with pine through the finish.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear dark brown with a finger of beige head. Chocolate and coffee aromas on the nose. Palate is similar, nice balance between both with a mildly dry finish. Enjoyable!

2021 bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a dark brown to black with a finger of beige head that lingers. Lovely aromas of toffee, molasses and black sugar. Bourbon and vanilla as it warms. Palate is very similar. Very drinkable for the ABV with lots of depth from the bourbon barrels. Very enjoyable.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a dark caramel color with a full two fingers of off white head that lingers. Sweet malt, toasted molasses and light herbal hops on the nose. A bit sweet for me, but enjoyable enough.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a unclear orange gold with a finger fo white foam that dissipates. Nice lacing down the glass. Some light gooseberry, crackery malt and orange zest aromas. Slightly skunky on the palate with not much hop character at all....maybe some oxidation, sharp bitterness and lingering resin. Not that good.

12 oz bottle. A golden pour, clear except for the occasional small particle, with a white head. Toasty pale malt aroma with a bit of hoppiness. Leads in with some of the Nelson Sauvin hop flavors, into biscuity, toasty pale malt flavor with some tea-like hoppiness, light bitterness. Nothing too exciting, but it's pretty good.

12 ounce bottle from Keweenaw Coop, 6/27/20. Hazy amber, large tan head, good retention. Aroma of buttery malts and a bit of pepper. Taste is tart fruits and diacetyl. Thin. Gross. About what I expected.
