Description
Arbor Brewing Company was founded by husband and wife team Matt and Rene Greff, who share a passion for beer and adventure. By their late 20’s, the Greffs had become disenchanted with their corporate gigs and soon after brewpubs were legalized in Michigan, they set about opening their own. They opened their doors in July, 1995 and became the first brewpub to open in Ann Arbor and only the fifth brewpub to open in Michigan’s fledgling industry.

With the brewpub humming along and craft beer continuing to gain momentum, Matt and Rene set their sights on opening a production brewery to increase production and open up state-wide distribution. As long-time Ypsilanti residents, the Greffs wanted to help spearhead the economic renaissance in their hometown, so they chose an old ware house in Ypsilanti’s historic district, at that time still a few blocks off the beaten path. Cornery Brewery opened to the public in 2006.The Corner Brewery quickly became a favorite local hangout, and by 2010 the brewery was bursting at the seams. So we set our sights on an ambitious $1 million expansion and green brewery renovation project. In addition to adding solar panels to the roof and geothermal cooling underground, the project doubled the amount of car parking, tripled the amount of bike parking, added 2,200 new warehouse and office space, doubled the brewing capacity, and increased the bottling speed 5 fold. This renovation set the stage for continued growth.

In May of 2017, Arbor Brewing Company was purchased by Farm + Ferment, a Michigan-based farm and hospitality group which also includes Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina, Bacco Ristorante, Michigan Hop Alliance, and Baia Estate. The new ownership group continues the entrepreneurial spirit started by Matt and Rene, and brings synergies and growth opportunities with their hop farm and vineyard, both located on the Leelanau Peninsula. We again set out on another round of renovations and upgrades including a new kitchen at the brewpub, a new lab and production equipment at the brewery, and culminating at the end of 2017 with the installation of new, state-of-the-art canning line.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, but fast-dying tan and light brown head that leaves a pretty nice lace on the sides. Aroma of oatmeal, cherries, light coffee and some relatively pungent nuts with a good deal of cream, lactose and especially vanilla here, but the oats and roasted malt bill is the strongest. Medium-bodied; Rich oatmeal and nutty flavours come through at a big bite with some coffee, vanilla, cream and lactose, along with some bitter rustic and earthy qualities, but this is balanced pretty nicely here. Aftertaste is pungent, deep, bitter and grainy with a good level of sweetness that isn't cloying at all, but enjoyable throughout. Overall, a very nice beer with a great malty kick, some pungent sugars and robust bitterness from the grain and coffee, but balanced nicely throughout. A good beer to sample, especially when the weather still is a bit chilly (as it should be) in early Spring. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Kroger in Detroit (Utica, 23 Mild Road), Michigan on 18-April-2023 for US$10,99/six pack sampled in my hotel room here in Utica, Michigan on 18-April-2023.

12 oz can, no date I can find. Hazy yellow pour with some small chunks sinking to the bottom and a white head. Citrusy grapefruit aroma with some herbal hops and a touch of caramel sweetness. Citrus hop flavor, some grassy herbal hops, a bit of biscuit and a light sweetness. A decent one.

12 oz can. Pours a hazy golden with a few fine particles visible. Juicy orange/grapefruit citrus in the aroma. Flavor mixes citrusy and tropical hop flavors, fairly juicy, and pretty nice.

On tap at Corner Brewery. Pours a pale yellow with some small particles. Funky white grape aroma, not quite sure how to describe it. Flavor is a more sour white grape, a very drying tartness, red apple, apricot. Again it's kind of hard for me to accurately describe, but I really like it.

On tap at Corner Brewery. Pours a hazy pale golden with a white head. Aroma of citrus and biscuit. Flavor has lemon at first, with some other citrus and biscuit, but still definitely lemony. Also tried a handpull with Nelson Sauvin and lemon peel added, which tasted like a very different beer: more herbal and spicy hop profile, still with lemon, but only at times.

On tap at Corner Brewery. Pours a deep brown with an off-white head. Roasty cocoa coffee aroma with a touch of fruit. Flavor is roasty with coffee and molasses. It has a lighter body but also a lasting roasty, bitter finish. Very nice.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear, glowing straw gold with a finger of white foam that lingers. Great lacing down the glass. Lovely nose of citrus, honeydew melon, mango and honey. Flavors get a bit muddled on the palate, but still quite enjoyable. Pine and pith on the finish.
