Description
Arbor Brewing Company was founded by husband and wife team Matt and Rene Greff, who share a passion for beer and adventure. By their late 20’s, the Greffs had become disenchanted with their corporate gigs and soon after brewpubs were legalized in Michigan, they set about opening their own. They opened their doors in July, 1995 and became the first brewpub to open in Ann Arbor and only the fifth brewpub to open in Michigan’s fledgling industry.

With the brewpub humming along and craft beer continuing to gain momentum, Matt and Rene set their sights on opening a production brewery to increase production and open up state-wide distribution. As long-time Ypsilanti residents, the Greffs wanted to help spearhead the economic renaissance in their hometown, so they chose an old ware house in Ypsilanti’s historic district, at that time still a few blocks off the beaten path. Cornery Brewery opened to the public in 2006.The Corner Brewery quickly became a favorite local hangout, and by 2010 the brewery was bursting at the seams. So we set our sights on an ambitious $1 million expansion and green brewery renovation project. In addition to adding solar panels to the roof and geothermal cooling underground, the project doubled the amount of car parking, tripled the amount of bike parking, added 2,200 new warehouse and office space, doubled the brewing capacity, and increased the bottling speed 5 fold. This renovation set the stage for continued growth.

In May of 2017, Arbor Brewing Company was purchased by Farm + Ferment, a Michigan-based farm and hospitality group which also includes Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina, Bacco Ristorante, Michigan Hop Alliance, and Baia Estate. The new ownership group continues the entrepreneurial spirit started by Matt and Rene, and brings synergies and growth opportunities with their hop farm and vineyard, both located on the Leelanau Peninsula. We again set out on another round of renovations and upgrades including a new kitchen at the brewpub, a new lab and production equipment at the brewery, and culminating at the end of 2017 with the installation of new, state-of-the-art canning line.

10 ounce draft. The Brett funk is balanced by the honey sweetness. Yet in the finish the funk lingers slightly. The texture is bone dry. Really nice

Beer #4 (of 19) of my 9000th Beer Celebration [9 beers on both sides of #9000th itself] Deep, super dark brown coloured body with a slight hazy glow, but almost completely black look, even when held to the light at an angle, all with a very fast-dying two to three centimetre tall off-white head that goes away after a few seconds. Aroma of alcohol, figs, caramelised sugars, plums, apples, molasses and a lot of sweetness, but more from the malts and alcohol here in the nose - quite strong. Full-bodied; Rich figgy and plum, pitted fruit sweetness and fruit flavours dominate with a lot of rich malts and caramelised sugars including molasses and toffee, but the malts, strong bready and slightly doughy flavours make this pungent, rich and full of flavour, especially sweetness and alcohol near the end. Aftertaste is very figgy with a lot of plum, apricot and caramelised sugars with a ton of rich malts and a good deal of pungent grainy notes and some bread at the tail end with a lot of rich flavours through, especially the malty, sweet and alcohol ones. Overall, a surprisingly nice beer that is rich, full of character and showing the figs nicely, but the sweetness and pungency from fruits better than most with a lot of alcohol and richness from the malts in a great way. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Merchant's in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-December-2016 for US$2,99 sampled at my house here in Washington for Beer #4 (of 19) of my 9000th beer celebration [9 beers on both sides of #9000th itself] on 09-September-2021.

Can from Trader Joe's. Pours a clear orange gold with a finger of off-white head that lingers. Apricot and citrus aromas on the nose with a bit of honey. Some witbier like spices on the palate...maybe nutmeg, some floral notes followed by bitter orange and light pine. Dry finish.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a hazy, straw gold with a small white head with big bubbles that dissipates. Lots of white grapefruit, muscat and notes of lime on the nose. More of the same on the palate. Strong pithy, bitterness with lingering lemon zest and green citrus. Slight acidic note that lingers.

Crowler from the Corner Brewery. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has the orange and cocoa with a coffee touch. Flavor leans more on the roasty coffee and cocoa, but still with the orange note, and a fair amount of bitterness. Not bad.

The beer is a hazy orange-amber color with a medium ivory white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lace. Piney hops, citrus and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of resiny hop, grapefruit and biscuit malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a citrusy hop aftertaste. Decent overall.

Crowler filled a couple weeks ago. Pours black with a tan head. Dark fruit, molasses aromas, cinnamon. Flavor has molasses and raisin, some bourbon flavor, cinnamon, and roasty, silky cocoa. Definitely a tasty beer.

Draft at Bigalora Southfield. Pours a clear straw gold with a full 2 fingers of creamy white foam. Light grain and peppery hops on the nose. Crisp and clean, light-bodied and easy drinking. Peppery hops and grass with grain on the finish. Easy drinking, but complex with some lingering mineral notes on the finish. Pretty nice.

Draft at Bigalora Southfield. Pours a clear gold with 2 fingers of white foam that lingers. Lovely pine and citrus pith aromas with light toasted malt. Dry on the palate with pine, pith and faint citrus zest noticeable. Fairly dry finish with a light body and punchy, citrus focused hops. Preetty nice west coast leaning IPA. Very enjoyable.
