The company was founded in 2007 by a distiller, David MacDonald, and a local farmer, Innes MacPherson, who set out to produce world-class beers on the farm in Mulben. Initially brewing from a tiny pilot plant, for the first four years the brewery survived on the owners’ day jobs and focused exclusively upon getting the recipes and the products right. Distribution was deliberately confined to a limited number of informed, local buyers and it wasn’t until 2011 that the first commercial casks arrived on the market.
The first product – Spey Stout – was enthusiastically received by consumers and critically acclaimed throughout the wider brewing world. Encouraged by this early success, the company expanded production in 2012 and began distributing more widely throughout the North East and further afield. In early 2016, production moved to a dedicated unit – still on the farm! – that has seen Spey Valley Brewery become the largest brewery in the local area.
Brewery closed in 2020 and relaunched in Summer 2023 with a different beer lineup.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours clear lake golden with a bubbly white head. The aroma is sweet, bready, kind of grainy, biscuit, hay and grass. The taste is dry, crisp initially then softens, quite sweet, doughy bread, sponge cake, biscuit, grainy, wet grass, herbal and hay with a grassy, grainy finish. Average body and carbonation. Pretty ho hum stuff. Wouldn't return to it for sure. a bit sweet and grainy.

Bottle. Clear golden body with a white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of straw and a hint of burnt rubber. Flavour of lemon and tonic water. Thin to medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Very fizzy. It’s fine but a bit sharp and raw.

Opens with only a faint hiss. It pours oily her black with a only a few bubbles on the cap. The aroma is rich and oily, sweet, milk chocolate, maltesers, toffee crisp, fudge, vanilla, plenty of whisky character, some spice, damp oak, earth and honeycomb crunch. The taste is slick, oily, sticky, roasted malt, earthy, chewy, coffee, milk chocolate, dark chocolate torte, mars bar, big hit of whisky, toffee crisp, vanilla, toasted marshmallow, teacakes, wagon and some warming whisky through the finish. Fulsome body, slick mouth-feel and just a touch of carbonation. Surprisingly good. Nice whisky character which integrates well with the base beer. Would get a higher if it was in better condition, but still pretty great tbh. --- Beer merged from original tick of (collab with) Cadenhead's 13.SVB.121.A12. Imperial Milk Stout on 14 Dec 2020 at 17:04 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7.5. Original review text: Bottle picked up in Aberlour. Shared with my bro. It pours black with just a touch of kahki bubbles on the lid. The aroma is rich roasted malt, savoury, sticky malts, molasses, umami, liquorice, whisky, dull permanent marker pen, earthy, burnt toffee, damp oak, hint of smoke, roasted coconut, vanilla, rocky road and coffee grounds. The taste is slick, chewy, toothy, bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, vanilla, milk chocolate, maltesers, rocky road, fudge, teacakes, marshmallow, jammy wagon wheel, whisky, just a touch of alcohol (nowhere near 12%) and some dull oak with a slick, sweetish finish. Fulsome body, light carbonation and slick mouth feel. Again like the other one carbonation is a touch low, but it's flavourful and interesting. Nice.

Bottle from Westhill Service Station. It pours hazy muddy copper with a frothy white head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, peach candy, peach soda, gummy bears, slightly artificial, earthy and musty. The taste is sweet - sour, tangy peach, earthy, peach soda, sherbet, cola cubes, sour candy, damp wood and mild acidity with a dry finish. Average body and fine, foamy carbonation. A bit muddy if truth be told. It's ok, but wish it was brighter and tarter.
