Description
Spey Valley Brewery was the first commercial “micro” brewery to be located in the heart of Speyside, creating the finest hand-crafted beers from the same water as Speyside’s world renowned malt whiskies.

The company was founded in 2007 by a distiller, David MacDonald, and a local farmer, Innes MacPherson, who set out to produce world-class beers on the farm in Mulben. Initially brewing from a tiny pilot plant, for the first four years the brewery survived on the owners’ day jobs and focused exclusively upon getting the recipes and the products right. Distribution was deliberately confined to a limited number of informed, local buyers and it wasn’t until 2011 that the first commercial casks arrived on the market.

The first product – Spey Stout – was enthusiastically received by consumers and critically acclaimed throughout the wider brewing world. Encouraged by this early success, the company expanded production in 2012 and began distributing more widely throughout the North East and further afield. In early 2016, production moved to a dedicated unit – still on the farm! – that has seen Spey Valley Brewery become the largest brewery in the local area.

Brewery closed in 2020 and relaunched in Summer 2023 with a different beer lineup.

Dull amber, and pours a bit hazy. No head. What are we even doing here? The aroma is a chewy IPA, really old school and definitely stale, with scotch layered over top of that. Medium bitterness. Lots of chewy malt. Not much hop aromatics, as one might expect. The whisky is okay on here.

500ml bottle shared with Leif and Finn at a rating session. Fair off-white head over a deep black body, spotty lacing. Roasted dark malty aromas, mid-dry, inviting. Earthy chocolate malts up front to the taste character. Roasted, mid-dry chocolate malts to the finish. Fine depth to it. Pleasing. (Tromsø, 04.02.2026).

Hops are Simcoe and Cascade. Pitch black colour, moderate to small brown head. Aroma of roast malts, chocolate and mild coffee. Flavour with the same elements, medium dry. Moderate bittering hops.

Poured from 330mL bottle (bb 30/12/2026). It was warm stored when I purchased it late summer and had intended to drink it much earlier. Clear amber gold with small white head. Mild toffee malt, super feint smoked whiskey, very muted resin hops, definitely should have been consumed younger for more hop profile (I just let this sit in the fridge with the intention of sharing it, but never had an opportunity to so just decided to finally drink it). Okay.

330ml @ Ryan's.
Aroma: coffee, some sweetness, roasted malt, Belgian esters.
Taste: along the same lines, very low carbo, some caramel.
Overall: feels diluted, lacks intensity. It is a meh, but not a real disaster.

Poured from 330mL bottle (bb 10/08/2026). Dark brown with small off white head. A thin-ish bodied oatmeal stout with Belgian yeast. Inoffensive, not all that interesting, but it's fine.

500ml bottle from Aldi Inverurie. It pours darkest brown to black with a small, but lasting dark tan head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, charred, bitter - sweet, cookie dough, burnt treacle, cacao nibs, toasty brown sugars and a splash of cola. The taste is dark roasted malt, nip of spicy alcohol, slightly charred, burnt toast, slightly phenolic, umami, liquorice, toothy, cooking chocolate, earthy and toasty with a toasty finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Decent enough double stout. Good bang for your buck.
