Description
Spey Valley Brewery was the first commercial “micro” brewery to be located in the heart of Speyside, creating the finest hand-crafted beers from the same water as Speyside’s world renowned malt whiskies.
The company was founded in 2007 by a distiller, David MacDonald, and a local farmer, Innes MacPherson, who set out to produce world-class beers on the farm in Mulben. Initially brewing from a tiny pilot plant, for the first four years the brewery survived on the owners’ day jobs and focused exclusively upon getting the recipes and the products right. Distribution was deliberately confined to a limited number of informed, local buyers and it wasn’t until 2011 that the first commercial casks arrived on the market.
The first product – Spey Stout – was enthusiastically received by consumers and critically acclaimed throughout the wider brewing world. Encouraged by this early success, the company expanded production in 2012 and began distributing more widely throughout the North East and further afield. In early 2016, production moved to a dedicated unit – still on the farm! – that has seen Spey Valley Brewery become the largest brewery in the local area.
Brewery closed in 2020 and relaunched in Summer 2023 with a different beer lineup.

Cask @ Settle Inn, Stirling, quite close to the castle. Dark clear golden with a small bubbly-frothy head. Grassy-floral design in both aroma and taste, with some sweet fruit in the mix in the latter. Some metallic notes in the former.

Cask-conditioned at the Counting House (JDW), Glasgow May 2023. Golden in colour, with a touch of haze and slight, white, head. Floral hops, some white pepper and lemon character, sweet biscuity maltiness leading to a dryish finish. Fine.

Cask pint at The Justice Mill, Aberdeen. It pours pretty much black with a thick, sturdy deep tan head. The aroma is deep dark roasted malt, slightly charred, plenty of dark chocolate, gateaux, umami and liquorice allsorts. The taste is firmly dry upfront, bitter - sweet character, dark roasted malt, charred, umami, plenty of liquorice, liquorice allsorts, treacle, dark chocolate, cacao nibs and a touch of charred oak. Medium body and rather well carbonated for cask. Rich, robust and flavourful. One of the best Spey Valley beers I've had some time. Moreish.

330ml bottle from the Craft Bar, Pitmedden. It pours clear deep red with a tiny bubbly cap. The aroma is heady and intoxicating notes of peat, peated whisky, bitter - sweet, vanilla, whisky fudge, toffee crisp, toasted coconut, dried fruits and boozed soaked fruit cake. The taste is firmly dry, slick, oily, resinous, sappy, candied orange, peach, toasted fruit cake, plenty of heavy peated vibes, peat reek, vanilla fudge, charred, toasty, bonfire and warming booze with a smoky, spicy oak finish. Medium+ body, limited carbonation and slick mouth feel. A touch more carbonation wouldn't go amiss, but I like the heady peat in this. Decent.

Bottle, gift from Andrew. Black body with a tan head. Faint lacing. Aroma of oranges, raisins and dumpling. Flavour of ginger, spices and a hint of whisky. Thin to medium body with a watery texture. Very fizzy. Nice flavour but overcarbonated.
