Bottle at BBT 10/2024. Lots of cooked corn, raw grain, astringent. Little else. Unpleasant, hard to drink, really really bad.

Jubilee beer from one of only a couple of breweries in the small country of Transdniestra, operating in Moldovia's shadow so to speak, intended as an amber lager. Thanks tderoeck for this - to me - sought after country tick! Loose and open, bubbly, off-white, dissolving head over a hazy ruddy bronze beer with mahogany glow. Aroma of very, very strong solvents (nail polish remover, methylated spirits even), caramel, dried dates, rubber, ground hazelnuts, band aid. Weirdly sourish onset (cranberry-like almost), softly carbonated, acidic in an almost red wine vinegar-like way, rounded but simple caramelly maltiness, touch of brown bread, before this extreme solvent effect returns retronasally, with that weird red berry-ish acidity lingering, along with a dash of bready yeastiness; hop bitterness is nowhere to be found. Not knowing anything about this beer or its brewery beforehand, I was almost inclined to think that this was Transdniestra's take on a Flemish red - albeit a very poor attempt; learning that this is actually apparently a lager, makes things even worse. Something went thoroughly wrong here - sourness is definitely not a feature of Wiener or any other amber coloured lager (or any lager in general for that matter) and on top of that, this is arguably the most solventy beer I ever had to endure. Bizarre!
