Description
Co-founded in 1981 as Pitfield Brewery by Rob Jones (who went on to set up Dark Star brewery) and Martin Kemp operating from 8 Pitfield Street, N1 before moving to 4 Hoxton Square, N1 in 1986. Briefly relocated to Stourbridge following a merger with Premier Midland Ales, becoming Pitfield's Premier Brewing Co in 1990 but in 1991 the company went into liquidation.
Revived in 1996 as Pitfield's Brewery at 14 Pitfield Street, N1 before relocating outside of London to Great Horkesley, Essex in 2006 and then to Moreton, Ongar in 2007.
Martin, Pitfield's brewer/owner retired in 2012 to run a pub in Newmarket. Andy Skene bought the business and continued to brew Pitfield's beers alongside his own Dominion beers. This ceased in 2018.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Reddish brown ale. A bit monotone! Dry and crisp. Fairly bitter finish. Improved a little by pouring some of the sediment in but overall an average beer.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Hint of fruit and an even vaguer hint of caramel malt. Otherwise a sharp beer with a lingering bitter finish. Not great.

Bottle, from trade with Papsoe. Some microfloaties swirl in an else clear, copper colored body. A small, diminishing head sits on top. Some alcohol, as well as dried fruits, dark malts and sugar on the nose. Sweet, warming and full bodied with a good bitterness. Dried fruits and some licorice blends in. The flavor lasts for a good while, being more bitter in the end. Although a bit on the warming side, this is a nice and pleasant beer, but definitely not a thirst quencher. 100917

Bottle from Pigs Ear (Cheers to Keen and Rob). Opaque black brown beer. No head. Zero carbonation otherwise a neutral palate. Tangy dark malt leading to some nice fruitiness, orange and traces of lemon and strawberry. Interesting beer and could have been in the high 3s with some condition on it!

Bottle, courtesy of Papsoe. A clear, ruby colored beer with a small, beige head. Quite alcoholic nose, some dried fruits and toffee blend in. The flavor has dried fruits, a berry-like sourness, alcohol and some toffee. A little phenolic. Full-bodied and quite dry, finishing with a touch of chocolate in addition to the initial flavors. Not a bad one, but not very nice either. 100814

Pigs Ear Festival. Hazy amber beer, no real head. Low carbonation, slightly dry palate. Sweetish malt with an undertone of fresh apple and a little orange. The apple feels right here rather than being acetaldehyde. Reasonable well balanced. Not bad.

Cask handpull at Pigs Ear 2010. Pale gold slight haze. Lasting white head. Definite ginger aroma. Lots of ginger and lemon in mouth. Verge on soap. Not great.
