Totally hazy chestnut beer with orangey shine; slightly irregular off-white head, reasonably stable. AGAIN a cheesy nose - but this time it is a soft sweet cheese, kwark or so, and there are chives added. Bit vinous too. Ah - taste’s better - the cheese is smeared over malty, lightly toasted cookies, and the greenery is not just chives but also some (dried) hops, giving a somewhat bitterer finish. Medium to well-bodied, even a tad chewy. Long dry-bitterish aftertaste, completely at odds with the main taste. Another weird one from Pitfield. But, for once, one I could live with. His Lordship the Prince of Ales considers himself amused.

Yellow-brown head, gone in seconds; dark brown beer with amber-orange rims. Weird initial nose of honey and blue soft cheese, going over in cheesy hops, blueberries and flowery. Outspoken ultra-dry cardboard and chalk flavours, ending quite bitter, indeed like chewing on a cardboard box (imprinted?). There’s a sweeter, chocolate-like undercurrent. Medium bodied, not really thin, but quite flat. Weird. Strengthens my conviction that papier-maché is not eligible for my artistic ambitions.

[At Jyske Øldage 2004, Kolding] A hazy orange beer with a small white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and hops. The flavor is sweet and the mouthfeel rather flat. Quite boring.

[Cask at Wenlock Arms, London] A clear orange beer with a small disappearing head. The aroma is floral and grassy with distinct notes of hops. The flavor is slightly sweet with strong Goldings hop notes, which gives it a grassy flavor and a dry finish.

Hazy orange/amber coloured body with a small tan head. Aroma of PURE pumpkin with a good spice to it. Full-bodied; Strong pumpkin pie spice in the taste with a large sweetness. Aftertaste clean and spicey. Overall, damn good to try and very spicey-one for the pumpkin pie lover out there! I sampled this 12 ounce bottle at the November RB party at Founder’s in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-November-2004.

Nearly black beer; brown head. Very strong, candid nose of black malts, leafy notes, some meaty-estery stuff and molasses. Surprisingly dry-spicey, nearly bitterish taste, at odds with the nose; tobacco and coriander - and diacetyl! That’s what it is - yeast-management problems? Very well bodied, and indeed, like partly unfermented beer. In stark opposition to the XXXX Stock ale, this is again one of Pitfields problematic brews. Pushing a poor British yeast beyond endurance?

Dirty greige, fluffy head; very carbonated deep-dark opaque brown beer. Liquorice, mint, chocolate and fumed malts in the nose. Dark grains & malts, liquorice, quite sweet taste. Bit dull, really. Thinnish texture with slight grainy filling, kind of sticky. Nothing very heartlifting, even big brewers make this kind of thing daily. And it does not even benefit from room temperature.

Bottled. Cloudy dark amber/brown, small head. The same odd candle wax aroma as in their 2004 Christmas ale. Sweet and bold with clean malt profile and notes of honey. Short finish. Feels like drinking a liquid candle...

Very orange tinted amber; yellow-orange tinted head, dwindling. Ink, toffee, freshly ground coffee - and quite some hops. The roasted coffeebean aroma is very remarkable, and really brings forward an image of these grind-your-own-coffee machines at the local supermarkets 30 years ago. The coffee aroma prolonges itself in the flavour, becoming quite overwhelming, chicory-like. Very bitter, thus, tad harsh and metallic, but also quite vegetable-bitter. Only after quite some time, the bitterness dulled by adaptation, I detect some caramel-like malt. Medium to well bodied, bit oily & slick, aftertaste very roasted, alcoholburn. Good one - big thanks to Mat Wilson. Actually, this is the finest Pitfield brew I’ve head since their very first London stout decennia ago, and the first one I really like since years.

Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. Black (= very dark brown) colour. Interesting and unusual aroma: Ensilage, fresh mown grass, candy ("Kongen av Danmark"), hints of old ladies with a questionable personal hygiene. (Bordering on vomit, according to chris_o, but I liked it.) Flavour is grassy, citrussy, green apples. Easy drinking. Fruity finish.
