Description
The Dortmunder Union Brewery (DUB) was established in 1873, the first brewmaster was Fritz Brinkhoff (1848-1927), who worked 50 years for the brewery. In 1887, a failed brew was delivered to a customer in Aachen which was a huge success. The Dortmunder Export was born.

In 1994, the Union Brewery took over the Dortmund Ritter Brewery, established in 1889, and renamed itself the Dortmund Union Ritter Brewery. Production was relocated from the city center to the previous production facility of the Ritter brewery on the outskirts in Lütgendortmund. In 2002 the Union-Ritter-Brauerei was renamed the Brinkhoff Brewery, and in 2006 production was relocated to the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei.

Sampled from 0.5 l bottle from ’Rudat’, best before April 2018. Clear, golden yellow with a thin, foamy, stable, white head. Sweetish, slightly grassy aroma of grains and hints of straw. Sweetish, slightly bitter, moderately grassy-spicy taste of grains and some straw, followed by a short, slightly bitter, moderately grassy-spicy, a bit dry finish. Almost medium-bodied, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Easily drinkable but not really ’premium’, what do I have to expect from the standard version now?

On-tap pint in The Bradford Arms Hotel, Llanymynech, just inside Shropshire. Nowhere near as good as I hoped, watery and weak. Looked fine, golden, clean, clear and bright with a decent white crown on top. Just boring really, moved onto bottles of Warsteiner which were a whole lot better.

Bottle. Dark yellow with a decent head, not much in terms of lacing. Aroma is noble hops and grains. Taste is grassy, grainy, earthy, a little bit spicy and nicely hoppy in the aftertaste. Strong carbonation. Crisp, clean and goes down really well.
