Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Amber with a white head and a light to moderate fizz. Excellent condition, well done 'Spoons. Nice and fruity up front, a little caramel, and then a dry twiggy finish with a lasting marmalade bitterness. Very drinkable, very moreish, a decent bitter this.

Cask at Bull & Stirrup, Chester. Pours a slightly hazy straw with a small white head. Not much of an aroma – just vague traces of malt and yeast. In the mouth this starts off quite sweet with a creamy texture, malts to the fore and hints of hops. Later some bitterness creeps in alongside some grains and lemongrass. There’s a little stickiness in the finish. This is reasonable – which is praise because I don’t normally like Beartown beers !

Cask at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours almost black with a small tan head. There’s chocolate, coffee and roasted malts in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy with milky coffee, cocoa, roasted malts and some hints of cola. Some bitterness in the finish. This is a decent stout, but a bit too sweet for my taste.

Aroma is very fruity, malty, caramel, leaves, berries. Moderate sweetness and medium bitterness with a slight tart edge. Moderate body, soft carbonation. Light drying bittersweet berry tart finish.
