On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Clear amber body, thin off-white head. Leafy and bitter body, toasty and grassy with very light sweetness. Somewhat watery and bland. The Livery turns out a number of hoppy beers, but this was one of the weaker ones I’ve sampled.

Sampled at Manhattan Cask Fest - copper pour - aroma of pale british malts, light mineral character, and herbal bittering hops - very herbal and tea-like, with a mild underlying bitterness that compliments is well - biscuity malt underpins it all - the bitterness gets stronger near the finish, leading to a lingering herbal finish.

Big thanks to BBB63 for bringing this beer down to Degarth’s the Tampa tasting. It pours clear copper with thin white head. Big aroma of musty crushed diced prunes, ripe cherries, brown sugar, woody oakiness and a bit of mild heat. The taste is very similar with cherries, dates, plums, raisins all mixed with nice woodiness. Yum. I get notes of the Belgian yeasty spiciness along with faint bubble gum, banana and spice.

Rated March 2008. Big thanks to BBB63 for bringing this beer down to Degarth’s the Tampa tasting. Pours copper-ish orange with thin white head. The aroma has barrel wood notes, it seems a bit chalky, has fruity esters and some caramel. The taste is up front barrel aged wood and booze with a backbone of mild dark fruity ester and caramel malt roastiness. Then the booze fortified notes build again and provide a drying sense. Ends with fruity esters, mild maltiness and more booze.

Big thanks to BBB63 for bringing this tasty growler to Degarth’s Tampa tasting.

Pours deep gold with white head. The aroma doesn’t take any effort to pull in due to its strength. I easily pick up notes of pineapple, grapefruit, mild floral hops and some malt sweetness. The taste seems sessionable to start as the mild malt sweetness, pineapple, and pine hops ramp up to full power. The hops peak with late addition hop flavor to midway before the bottom drops out and the onrush of hop bitterness overtakes the flavor into the finish. Seems to taste and feel more like an IPA than an IIPA since it is smooth, well blended and extremely quaffable. Beware, dangerously drinkable.

Huge thanks to BBB63 for bringing this hand bottled elixir to Degarth’s Tampa Tasting. Pours brown with thin white head. It has a full aroma of bourbon and barrel aged woodiness with roasty dark malts and caramel filling in the cracks. The taste experience begins with a thick rich yummy mouth feel bringing in notes of creamy caramel candy mixed with bourbon and wood. Wow, great balance and mix of flavors that carry to the finish in a wooden boat slipping around in bourbon.

Big thanks to BBB63 for bringing this tasty growler to Degarth’s Tampa tasting.

Pours dirty copper brown with tan head. The aroma is lively with medium roasted malts mixed with citrus, pine and pineapple hops and then some mild caramel candy. Smells great. The taste seems a bit thin to start. The flavor has initial bolts of crystal malts and pine hops. The pine hops grow in bitterness as the taste progresses along with some caramelized maltiness. The after taste leaves a sensation much like running your finger along the bottom of a nearly done sparging hop bag and then tasting it. Yum, I’ve done that a plenty.

22 oz hand bottle shared by tjthresh, courtesy of BBB63 - enjoyed at the csbosox tasting on 3/7/08. Pour is golden, with some ruby highlights - no head whatsoever. Aroma of green apples, very bright and fruity. Some heat behind that. Wood is present, though certainly in the backseat behind the apples. I am assuming this was Brandy barrel? Taste is a fair amount of heat, with sourish apple and almost a Trippel body and finish to it. This was OK, but I thought the barrel was pretty overwhelming. Thanks to both Mike and Tom!

22 oz hand bottle shared by tjthresh, courtesy of BBB63 - enjoyed at the csbosox tasting on 3/7/08. Pour is Ruby - caramel brown, no head really, what exists is just a few soapy bubbles around the edge. Aroma of grain, rye and some pine hoppiness. Floral notes, sweetness - really a great nose. Taste is big on the grainy rye, very bitter from middle to finish. The nose and taste both fade pretty fast, but this was a nice one. Huge thanks to both Mike and Tom!

2008 MBG Winter Beer Fest. I enjoyed the last couple of ounces from the mini-keg. This was a very leafy, herbal beer with toasty malts backing the heavy hops profile. Tannic . Much like fall leaves.
