Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Consumed on premise at the Gingerbread Stout release party. This one poured a near pitch black color with little more than a wispy, small tan head to it. Aroma was some light spices, roasted and sweet malt characters, and what appears to be gingerbread. Flavor is cocoa, roasted malts, and gingerbread. Well I suppose they hit it if this is what they were aiming for. Alcohol was obviously there, but this brew was highly drinkable on that cold, windy Saturday.

Draft at brewery. Before I got even one sip of this brew I knocked a bunch of it on my shirt - great! Well well, it poured a near black color, with a very tiny tan head. Aroma was notes of berry, with some toasted, dark cocoa malts, touch of vanilla bourbon. Flavor is nice bourbon, toasted malts, berry notes.

Draft - poured a clear orange color with a small white head. Aroma was more clove and some allspice than perhaps nutmeg or cinnamon. Seet ginger notes, pumpkin - mild malts - this was a pretty good and solid pumpkin brew. Very refreshing for 8.5% - liked the brew a lot.

Location: Draft at the Brewery, 11/17/12
Aroma: The nose is heavy on bourbon and wood, with underlying herbal and pine hops
Appearance: This one pours a hazy dark orange color with a small head and some lacing
Flavor: The flavor has some of each of the bourbon and the hop bitterness, but the bourbon is stronger
Palate: The body is medium-plus, it feels fairly creamy, and the heat settles into the more dry finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty solid example of a bourbon barrel aged DIPA. The bourbon/wood definitely overpowers the hop presence in the nose, and it is also a little strong in the flavor, but the hops come through more in the flavor then in the nose. I thought the combination worked well, but if the bourbon overpowering the hops is not for you, you might not enjoy one.

Location: Draft at the Brewery, 11/17/12
Aroma: The nose has sweet malts, ginger, some spices, cinnamon, and some cookie
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a small head atop it
Flavor: The taste has a nice combination of sweet/cookie, spice, malts, and A little bit of booze
Palate: This one is rather drinkable considering the ABV, has a fairly full body, and creamy feel
Overall Impression: This one is one heck of a desert-style stout. I thought it really worked. I mean, I can’t imagine wanting to drink it everyday, but for an occasional one-off it is really good. The name says it all here, it is a gingerbread cookie stout, and they nailed it.

12oz glass at the Capitol Alehouse Innsbrooks. Pours a hazy orange with one ring of white head. Nose is more Belgian than IPA, and hardly any DIPA aromas; some spice, some orange, a little pepper. Flavor is the same, malty, candy sugar, orange. Medium bodied finish. Missed the mark for me.

Two 16oz pours at Can Can Brasserie in Richmond. Pours a hazy, orangey gold with some cloudy white head. Nose was mild, floral, honey, some white pepper, lightly grassy, some cheese cloth. Flavor was similar, sweet, orange blossom honey, light lemon, yeasty, white pepper. Medium bodied, soft, lightly chalky finish.

Had this on draft at the brewery, picked up a bottle but haven’t had the bottle version yet. This one poured a clear light copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma was nice citrus characters with a touch of pine in there too. Enjoyed this one a lot.

Draft at brewery. This would make sense being the base beer of the VA Strawberry and Blackberry beers (I’ve only had the Strawberry, but it seems pretty similar).
Poured a slightly hazy yellow-amber color with a medium sized white head, lots of carbonation in this one.
Aroma was a ton of wheat, with some light sweet malt characteristics.

Draft at brewery last Saturday. Poured a dark copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma was heavy on the bourbon, so much so that most of the rest of the beer has been pushed to the background on this particular brew. The flavor is about the same - very dominant with the bourbon, mellow with the rest. I remarked while drinking this that it wasn’t exactly a complex beer - at least not compared to something with a base that is a bit more dark and roasted, I did enjoy it a lot.
