Description
The last brewery in Hoegaarden, Tomsin, closed shop in 1957. Soon after, in 1965, the villagers decided to take action to preserve the original recipe. Milkman Pierre Celis decided to grasp the nettle and started brewing up a batch in his milk shed, using only a copper boiler. Because of the great success he quickly expanded his operation and moved into a bigger building – ‘De Kluis’ (The Vault) – a subtle nod to the monks. By 1985 the nod was no longer subtle as he was making more than 75.000 hectolitres per year. Just as he was about to start exporting to the United States, a large fire shattered his dreams (and the beer). The brewery was destroyed.

Since 1985, the brand has been part of Artois brewery, which provided fresh capital, after the fire. After the takeover, the recipe was changed to appeal to a wider audience and save on raw materials. The Artois brewery, which had already been absorbed into InBev (nowadays Aneuser-Busch InBev) for some time, decided in 2006 to close the brewery and move production to Jupille. On September 10, 2007, it was announced that Hoegaarden would once again be brewed in Hoegaarden. The brewery in Jupille didn't manage to imitate the typical taste of Hoegaarden...

Bottle. A full fruity aroma - primarily banana. Medium yellow color - cloudy. Flavor of wheat and banana esters - like a geared up version of their witbier or a Hefeweizen. Very nice.

Draft, Nice to find this served on tap just like any other beer. Yellow with a milky haze. Properly wit-like in taste, with a note of coriander. Of course there’s a lemon taste, since it was served with a slice of lemon. Refreshing, nice to sit and nurse as the evening wears on.

Very pale and hazy; firm medium white head; fruity, very aromatic nose (citrus, orange, coriander); fizzy, sparkling, refreshing; very smooth; fruity and a bit sourish aftertaste. A summer-wine........

(bottle) Hazy red coloured with cloudy big head. Fruity nose with a light smell of apricots. Light malty flavour with fruity aromas. The alcohol is well embedded and not disturbing. Nice beer.

(bottle) Hazy orange colour with lasting frothy head. Yeasty nose with a hint of orange/fruity notes. Spicy, medium carbonated start with complex aromas in the aftertaste. Less alcoholic than I expected. Interesting but not for everyday use.

Test vom 14.3.2005, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 7,5,4,5,9,7 - 6,05

Bottled, alc. 8.5% (BB 10/2005)
Hazy yellow, huge tight white head, nice lace. Spicey, lemony aroma, also some malt there. Medium-bodied, alcoholic, coriander and citron flavors. Good malty backbone with burning alcohol. Maybe not a world class brew but shows some character.

Bottled, huge white head (no matter how I tried to pur it), disappeared in a few minutes. Orangebrown/golden coloured and cloudy. Smells very fruity and fresh. Tastes fruity, spicy and a bit of alcohol. The minor alcohol taste fits the whole well, and suits the sweet fruit taste. Wellbalanced taste.

250 mL bottle from Switzerland. Really hazy pale yellow Wit with thick creamy lacing white head. Nice lemon and light spices in aroma. Lemon comes out too in mouth, with fresh wheat and coriander notes. This is so classic! I like the 250 mL format. a good dieter’s portion...hehehe
