Description
Big Hand Brewing Co. Ltd. is a family owned and run 10bbl (1.7 HL) microbrewery, based in the North Wales powerhouse of Wrexham. Started by an Uncle and Nephew team, Dave (Uncle) and Andy (Nephew) decided to give up the luxuries of a guaranteed income and offices with heating to brew beer they would both be proud to serve.

Armed with nothing more than a redundancy cheque, a pair of Wellington boots and Google, Dave convinced his wife that starting a brewery was the correct course of action. Having found a piece of kit with suitable pedigree, Dave realised that he needed someone else to do the cleaning. So, the shortest telephone conversation in history was made: “Hi Andy. Do you want to give up teaching and brew beer?” – you can fill in the rest.

In the rather cold winter of 2012, Dave and Andy started the process of putting the brewery together. Dave’s background in construction and engineering proved invaluable, while Andy’s background in theology proved, well, useless. Still, he could hit things with a hammer so he was happy.

Officially born in March 2013, Big Hand Brewing has quickly established itself as a serious player in the North Wales craft brewing scene, racking up five SIBA Regional awards in three years. But as the brewery develops, and as new recipes are discussed and trialled, the underlying beliefs from the start remain the same....

1) Beer should make you smile.
2) Beer should be drinkable.
3) Beer should be drunk with friends.

Hand pulled half pint at the Pheasant Inn & Brewhouse on 23rd May 2025. Bright and clear golden body, white crown on top. Nice, easy going Pale Ale, slightly more malty than hoppy, but it's close.

Hand pulled half pint in the garden of the Black Bear (Whitchurch) on 23rd May 2025. An Australian IPA according to the pump clip, so assuming it's got Aussie hops within. It may well have, but I didn't pick up on anything strong or different, this is a subtle IPA, nice enough but nothing stands out aroma or flavour wise, just a pleasant blend of hops and malts which I enjoyed while sitting in the early evening sunshine.

Beer Number #3 tried at the Clitheroe Beer Festival 2025. Going through the dark beers I want first at this festival. Dark brown and fairly regular to begin with, some berry notes amongst the roasted, with a smooth texture too. Its liquorice does come to the fore in its aftertaste.

Bottle online from Blas Ar Fwyd, North Wales. Pours clear gold with white foam. Aroma: pale malts, biscuit, citrus, mildly floral. Taste: light to moderate sweet & bitter. Towards medium body with soft carbonation. It felt like this beer doesn't know if it is meant to be trad golden ale or a craft(ier) APA. It's a bit muddled.

44oml can (unfiltered) from the brewery, a present from Adam (Tank), cheers. Drank at home on 25th February 2025. Golden orange body, clean and clear, the head a white cloud of gentle bubbles. Simcoe hops doing their thing here, citrussy and piney flavours battle against the malt, and the result is an easy going Pale Ale that slips down nicely.

Cask at Architect, Chester. Pours lemon yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s floral hops and grains in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and smooth with a slightly creamy texture. Flavour has floral hops, citrus and malts with hints of lime and melon. A little bitterness in the finish. This is reasonable.
