Bottled (BB 10/2008)
Clear ruby read color, small off-white head. Nutty toffeish and oaky aroma. Slightly nutty hoppy with woody toffeish flavors. Reminds me about some Fullers. Nutty hoppy aftertaste, hops live in the mouth quite long. Nicely balanced session beer.

Cask at GBBF 2006. A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong spicy notes, medium notes of caramel, and light notes of sulphur. The flavor is sweet malty - againg with strong notes of spices - especially ginger, leading to a dry and slightly woody and bitter end.

Cask handpump at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Straw with a white head; smells of oranges; and tastes of orange marmalade; sweet and tart at the same time, finishing with a short, sharp, bitter burst.

500ml bottle from Waitrose. A rather disappointing example of a witbier. An unappetisingly muddy straw colour, with a white head that disappeared immediately; some cloves on the aroma but also insipid tinned fruit; very thin and wheaty in the mouth; leaving a dry and unpleasantly spiced aftertaste.

Cask at the Old Manor House (JDW), Bracknell. Chestnut with an off-white head; deep malty aroma; fruity taste finishing with a slightly dry, rounded, bitterness. A well balanced bitter, but rather thin.

500ml bottle from Waitrose, Bracknell. A bright chestnut colour with a rapidly disappearing beige head; little aroma; but a warm full-bodied nutty flavour; with a fruity aftertaste. Very nice indeed.

Cask Darker foxy amber; small but good persistent yellow/orangey head. Malty notes, colour malts, sweet but cake neither bread - in between. Sweet-malty with a bakery touch - bottom of the pie. good sugar syrup with a maple touch and in the finish some shy hops. Malty, but that’s about it. GOOD malts, granted.

Cask at The Monks’ Retreat (JDW), Reading. I really enjoyed this; amber with an off-white head which, though small, lasted to the bottom of the glass leaving lots of lacing; malty aroma with a hint of spice; big and malty in the mouth with some spicy notes again, then a watery lull before the pleasantly bitter aftertaste hits; finish is smooth and creamy.

Cask at The Monks’ Retreat, Reading Very light in appearance and very lively, almost lager like; good citrus flavour with a pineapple-like sweetness, followed by some bitterness. Refreshing, would make an excellent summer drink, but wasn’t waht I was expecting from a Christmas seasonal.
