Description
Our mission is pretty much monomaniacal: to brew f*cking good beer. We call it craft-y beer because the owl's got a sharp, uncompromised tongue and a penchant for mischief.

On a typical day we toy with the familiar – unfiltered lager, silky hefeweizen and puckery American IPA, anyone? – but at night we explore the crafty beer extremes from our medieval watering hole Haarlem (That's Haarlem with two 'a's, the Dutch one, and the namesake of New York's single-'a'ed Harlem).

Really truly, our idea of fun is abusing the rauchbeer-Scotch ale-sour beer-oak-aged Imperial Stout-Barley wine clichés. The first rule of owl school: when using hops think in wheelbarrows and not buckets.

So enjoy us, drink us and by all means hop fans abuse us right back – ideally via our social media channels where we announce our very active new creations.

Acquired by Swinkels Family Brewers in 2021.

33 cl bottle @ home. Black color. Beige head, not much, with short retention. Aroma’s of iodine/bandage, peat. Retronasal there’s additionally some roasted malts, hints of wood and whisky. Flavor is moderate sweet with a light fruity acidity and light bitterness. Alcohol noticable. Body is medium. Rather low carbonation. Short finish with ash, slightly dry, moderate bitter. Very enjoyable .

Pours black , almost no head ( mocha coloured ) Smells a bit sweet , but very unintence . Good carbo , whiskey taste is there , just spot on ! Not too intence , not to weak . Mouthfeel is a bit thin . Some of the ’ usual ’ stout taste in the back . Much oak , but like stouts with more in-your-face roasted malt tastes . Very well made nevertheless !

Tap at the Arendsnest, Amsterdam. Poured a deep mahogany with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is grassy hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a watery grass nettle hop liqourice bitter palate and a lingering bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle at the De Molen Second Tuesday Tasting, January 2014. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is huge medicinal whisky alcohol. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a rich oily smoky alcoholic bitter liqourice palate. Medium to full bodied with flat carbonation. The alcohol totally consumes this beer. The barrel ageing is supposed to compliment a beer but this is just a little too much for me.

Bottle shared at the De Molen First Tuesday tasting. Pours near black with a small beige head. Aroma is overpowering whiskey. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter. The whiskey is still overpowering in the palate but some of the stout comes out underneath. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Too much barrel.

Bottle at the De Molen Second Tuesday Tasting, January 2013. Poured a hazy dark brown with a round glass hugging bubbly light tan head. The aroma is weak dry malt. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a chewy malt alcohol liqourice bitter, light red berry fruit palate. Medium to full bodied with flat carbonation. A slightly oily mouthfeel and a long bitter finish. The aroma was weak and disappointing but this is a somewhat fully bodied beer that ultimately made up for the initial inadequacy.

On tap @ Arendsnest. Color is as good as black. Seems cloudy (hard to tell). Light beige head. Aroma’s of resinous hop, skunky, some acidity, some roast. Flavor is roasted, moderate bitter, just very lightly sweet, light acidity. Body is light to medium. Finishes ashy, roasted, with a resinous burp and moderate bitter flavor. Nice try, but needs more balance.
