Description
Our real ales are hand crafted with the local palate in mind, and to exacting standards. We take great pride in the production of our products which are brewed traditionally, with no concentrates, colourings or extract and with accent on the taste of yesteryear. When was the last time you savoured the aroma of a mass produced beer, or tasted its wholesome natural flavour?

Opened in 1995. Moved in 2000 from Gillfoot Brewery, Southerness, Kirkbean.

Drunk at the Sulwath Brewery tap. Amber/tan, hazy. Crystal malt, forest floor and vinous aroma. Bittersweet taste with a surprising sourness to cap it off. Not my favourite but we can’t like them all!

Keg tap from the Brewery Tap, Castle Douglas. Light brown/amber with a tiny wisplet of white head. Light scent of malt, berries. Taste is standard but enjoyable: a simple bittersweet taste which leads to a surprisingly dry finish. Light body. Not the greatest of beers, but thus would be a welcome alternative to bland Scottish pub bitters.

Bottle from the Sulwath Brewery Tap, Castle Douglas, consumed on site. Tawny brown, with a slight off-white head. Aroma of hazelnut, malt, caramel. Tiniest vegetal note. Sweet malty taste with herbal edges. The naked honesty of this brewery excites me: the beers are so simple, and they either work or don’t. This one does.

Cask handpull at the Sulwath Brewery Tap. Citrus aroma, light and not particularly enticing. However the taste brings forth a nice gentle hoppy bitterness, rounded off with a sweeter, maltier taste near the finish. As simple as it gets.

Keg at the Sulwath Brewery Tap, Castle Douglas. Bright yellow, darker than straw but lighter than gold. Light lemony aroma, pure but hard to detect. Tastes lovely though... citrus bittersweet married with a sweet/savoury malty backbone. Perfect amount of carbonation.

Cask at the standing order. Pours clear dark brown, red chinks, thin beige head. Aromas of treacle scones. Taste is treacle too. Very thin and watery, like diluted treacle I guess. Some coffee notes sneak past the treacle, but it’s pretty poor overall.

On cask at the Standing Order. Appearance - deep brown to black. Orange or red chinks around the glass. Nose - dark chocolate and roasty aromas. Taste - toffee and nuts. Dark chocolate again. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and an effortless elegant finish. Overall - this is really tasty when you consider the ABV. It’s really tasty even if you don’t.

500ml bottle: BBD 16 Jun 15. Poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged pint vase at home on 2 Feb 15. Obtained from an Edinburgh Aldi during their 2014 Scottish beer promotion (I think I bought 23 different bottles). This one is very pale, clear and bright, golden in colour, the head a steady, thin foam blanket. Grapefruit esters and flavours from the start, but not sour or overpowering. Refreshing and almost sharp on the palate this is one of the better golden citrusy flavoured beers I have had recently. Nice!
