Description
Sunbeam Ales is a Leeds based microbrewery run by Nigel Poustie. It was established in 2012 and has developed a reputation for multi award-winning cask ales. The brewery is only 2BBL so limited amounts of the sort after cask ales are distributed around Yorkshire.

Nigel mostly brews once a week, occasionally twice, rotating through a range of beers. Periodically he will brew a seasonal special, often incorporating foraged ingredients. The brewery doesn’t hold much stock, so it is a good idea to place pre-orders.

Cask @ Drink? Hebden Bridge. Hazy dark amber-brown with washy dark malts, some of which are roasted. Its vanilla is light in taste and the beer has gritty nose.

Bottle at home. Gift, so unsure of provenance. Pours clear golden amber with a short-lived thin white head. Aromas of ginger and butterscotch. Taste is light sweet up front, then ginger. Light heat. Sweet finish.

Strong ginger nose. Slightly unclear pale amber, small fizzy off-white head, mostly diminishing, no lacing. Aroma malts, ginger, caramel, straw. Taste light sweet and bitter, malty, ginger, white pepper, straw. Sweetbitter finish, dusty and peppery notes, light body, watery texture, average carbonation. Interesting but unfortunately thin and one-dimensional.

Cask @ Drink? Hebden Bridge. Copper-gold with a glow. Slightly dry, hope with a rawness to its grainy-malty taste.

Bottle. Bier Huis, Ossett. Label reads Sunbeam Ecpipse. Clear, cola brown. Thin, dense, beige head. Nose has spent coffee grinds. Chocolate orange. Wood ash. Some berry fruits, too. Smells good. Tadte is dry and ashy, with a lick of orange rind sweetness. Light body with burp inducing fizz. Fairly smooth, though. Ashy dry finish, with a bitterness that rises and lingers. Very decent, low strength porter. Could do without the fizz so much, though. 8373-16

Bottle. Bier Huis, Ossett. Clear, chestnut brown. Film and sudsy ring, of dirty beige head. Nose has earthy coffee bean. Plum stone. Wood ash. Dried vine fruits. Treacle. Taste is ripe stone fruit sweet, with some earthy, ashy dryness. Mouthfeel stays on the right side of chewy. Fine carbonation. Dry on the finish, with a touch of coffee bitterness. Nice porter. Comes together well.
