On cask at the Guildford Arms. Appearance - golden amber with a decent head. Nose - a bit restrained. Then malt with a hint of toffee. Taste - toffee and orange. Then more toffee. Some hazelnut. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - would like more biscuits or fruit refreshment at the end.

Cask @ Three Cups, Bedford. Mid to dark brown, translucent. Small head of natural carbonation. Malt, chocolate, light vinegar in the aroma. Sweet malty taste, but a bitter chocolatey twinge balances. Medium bitter finish. Not bad.

Cask at the Bedford Arms, Bedford. Dark chocolate brown with a bit of tan head. Aroma of liquorice, plums and coffee beans, with a bit of coal smoke and chocolate. Taste is mostly sweet with a slight vinegar sweet-sour bite at the end. Pleasant bitter-sour finish and aftertaste. Body weaker than I’d expected, and quite flat. A mixed bag.

Cask at the Bedford Arms, Bedford. Copper/amber, slightly hazy with a bit of natural head. Aroma of caramel, crystal malt, raisins. A sweet fruit/malt taste is met with an astringent bitter. The bitter seems to win. Nice but the balance is a bit off. Palette is quite thin for an ESB. Aftertaste is bitter bordering on acrid. I like this beer one minute, and dislike it the next. While I must applaud its tenacity, it’s unbalanced and unsure of itself. A good enough drink but one is enough.

Cask @ Bedford Arms, Bedford. Light gold with the tiniest of head. The aroma is more exciting, and quite scrummy: gooseberry, gardenia and a bit of grassy hop. The taste is pretty good as well, a straight muted bitter with some sweet edges. Medium finish, bit of juicy fruit in the aftertaste. Not much in the body. In a way this is just another golden beer... but it’s a good one.

My last beer in The Mariners, Great Yarmouth on 8th June 2014. Half-pint, cask. Brown and dark with a beige covering. Malty from the off, dark fruit flavour and aromas, semi-sweet with a mildy bitter finish. OK rather than great.

Bottle from Bideford Asda. Dark ruby in colour, no head. Has a mild sweetness but a very uninteresting character.

50cl bottle from Asda, bottled conditioned, batch number 254. An attractive deep golden brown colour with just a trace of head; aroma of muscavado sugar; rather thin in the mouth, but with earthy malt, raisins, and chocolate flavours; then a dry finish. A very drinkable bitter.

500ml bottle from some massive supermarket somewhere. First things first.. you get a huge noseful of berries with this one. Really jumps out the bottle. Next there’s a soapy hoppiness to this.. like those hard soap sweets only 2 people liked in the whole year at Primary school. Then there’s the slight bitterness that tickles the back of the palette. I quite liked that. In all, it tasted good but felt like they accidentally stumbled onto a nice taste and just kind of went with it.
