The first of its kind to establish brewing and distilling roots under a single roof, Maplewood has been producing finely crafted beer and spirits out of their 10BBL brewhouse and 250L Kothe hybrid still since 2014. Three years after moving into the production facility, Maplewood opened the Lounge, a neighborhood bar doubling as a cocktail parlor and brewery taproom. Beginning commercial distribution throughout Illinois shortly after settling into the Logan Square space, Maplewood has since expanded their distribution footprint into Missouri, SW Michigan, Northern Indiana, Wisconsin and Kansas. Maplewood’s patrons have come to expect expertly crafted beer in a wide range of styles.

Bottle provided for review. Under the cap, there a lighter cranberry smell, kind of like a diluted cranberry wine. The color is a dark ruby brown. There’s a minimal stream of bubbles feeding a a short-lived tan head. The taste is rather malty up front, particularly with the aromatic quality of a Belgian pilsner. Hops are light, letting the warm saison complexity in. This style is usually noted for a funky quality, but that’s mostly absent here. Instead there’s a minimal tartness that may be as much from the cranberry as anything else. There’s some sediment at the bottom of the bottle, so you should hold back the last few ounces of the bottle, then swirl it into your empty glass for a bite of yeastiness. The total package is a bit fruity, a bit spicy, decently carbonated. It should work best with a creamy dessert or cheese. But this would fit in at any part of a holiday.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a cold early December weeknight. Appearance is cloudy dark brown with a rich frothy off white head. Aroma of light caramel, dark roast coffee. Taste is very unique, I think I’m getting kind of a cucumber / pickle flavor which is unexpected, not sure what that is, along with very subtle caramel and coffee. Overall this is an enjoyable brew.

22oz bottle. Amber-copper body, thin off-white head. Soft, fruity, well balanced. Pleasant sweet malt tones complement the orange, mild pink grapefruit tones. Azacca clearly isn’t the only hop tone, the others actually flesh it out, but also imparts a rindy, soapy, classical NW feel. Almost drinks like an APA, with the earthy caramel notes. OK.

Sample at Paddy Long’s in Chicago. Cloudy orange color with a medium bone white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Sticky strings of lacing. Tropical fruit, hops and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of tropical fruit, melon, herbal hops and biscuit malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a fruity hop aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Slightly hazy copper and light orange coloured body with a very faint off-white head. Aroma of metal, light powdered ginger, malt and a touch of belgian yeast. Medium-bodied; Bitter malt and yeast flavours at first with a pronounced powdered ginger flavour and a light grain note, all with some metallic twangs on the finish. Aftertaste shows a good deal of ginger, but not full ginger, just powdered, along with a metallic flavour and some harsher malt notes, all capped by a noticeable belgian yeast flavour. Overall, a decent beer with some acceptable flavours, but nothing great nor worth searching out, in this nice city of beer. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from West LakeView Liqours in Chicago, Illinois on 14-November-2015 for US$9,95 sampled at home in Washington on 02-February-2016.
