In 1849, the brewery was closed. Some 100 years later, lay persons were allowed to brew abbey beers for the first time. Brasserie de l’Abbaye d’Aulne revived the brewing business in 1950. Today, the Abbey produces its specialty Belgian beer following the traditional brewing arts of its founders, the Cistercian monks of Aulne Abbey.
Since 2000 the beers are brewed at the Brasserie du Val de Sambre an innovative small brewery making high quality beers available in more than 22 countries worldwide. In May 2019 a brand new brewery was opened in Thuin.

Red-brown beer, clear. Slightly brown-coloured head, not very copious and fast gone. Rich almondy or marzipan cake aroma; some toffee. Some spice also - maybe rosemary or lavender. Quite nice. Taste: sweet. cake-ish, fruitcake (no pun intended). Some cola flavour too. Mouthfeel: flat. Sweetness remains. Slight sourish finish. This brewery has mastered its aromas. I get the impression they're working on the taste. The palate is for the next five-year plan. Old Walloon communists?

Very irregular brownish head, collapsing. Dark, hazy brown beer. Nose with Brasil nuts, toffee, chocolate. Something lactic. Taste is BITTER chocolate (surprising viz. the nose), some coffee. A bit of black cardamom retronasal. Mouthfeel: WATERY. Beer falls away completely, no aftertaste. This absence of mouthfeel, watery palate seems a hallmark for this brewery. Utterly un-Belgian. B.T.W., the cartoon monk's gone, for a beautifully executed Medieval abbeyruin.

Very irregular head, with very large bubbles initially, collapsing. Golden-orange beer, clear. Fine citrussy nose, spicey (sarriette), some chalk. Citrussy & spicey taste again. Slightly sharp, hard to define. Turmeric, maybe, but less perfumed. Hint of diacetyl. Bitterness is there retronasal, but turns out spicey (turmeric), and quickly gone. Watery mouthfeel! Not at all right for a 9% tripel. Bit spritzy carbonation. Disappointing. The fine spicey aroma seems promising, but the palate is nowhere.

Big irregular white head, dissipating. Strong bubbling, orange beer with greenish shine. Nose gives chalk, grain or flour. Orange, citrussy, candi sugar. Also something vaguely sulphury. Taste of bitter orange, orange peel. Very dry mouthfeel. Light to medium bodied. A bit fizzy. No new aftertaste, slight alcoholburn. Beer seems to want to deliver everything at once. Then nothing remains - and it wasn't very much after all.

Dark seasonal abbeybeer with an aroma of liquorice and blueberries. Something spicey, an tobacco tones as well. Sweet overall taste but with bitter overlying impression from the malts (and spices?).

Subtle flavours of malt, cardamom, and other spices, and a rather dry finish.
