Kegcdraught at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Light gold and hazy with a small white head and a fair bit of lacing. Fresh aroma of lime and linen. Taste is a bit sweet at first, with lots of lemon juice and gooseberry. Chalky bitterness in the finish. Medium body and carbonation. It's a little strange not sure I'm enamored of it.

In 1972, Jethro Tull released Thick as a Brick, album purported to make fun of the prog rock Giants (Yes, Genesis) in the day. Not everybody got the joke, as the saying goes. They went to number 1 is the US, and TAAB is considered by many to be a staple in the prog rock genre. So here we are with Bang the Elephant's Oldskool Twigg Merchant. Joke? Lets see.Ruby and clear with a big beige head, with aromas of oak, cinnamon and caramel which serve to entice rather than promote ridicule. Sweet taste, very oaky but not overdone. Medium body with enough carbonation to give it oomph. Maybe I'm not getting rhe joke because this is lovely.

Handpull cask at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Light gold and clear with a spotty loose white head. Metallic aroma, some boiled sweet. Weird taste. Sweet with some tropical fruit and touches of compost. Chalky bitterness in the finish. Medium and slightly oily body with no carbonation. Unfortunate.

Gravity cask at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Light to kid-gold and clear with a spotty off-white head. Aroma of white grape, gooseberry, a touch of pineapple. Classic NZ pale smell. Taste is sweet and elevates the gentle malt character, through to the short finish. Classic NZ pale, like feeding 'NZ pale' into an AI brewer but don't get me wrong, very very nice.

Keg draught at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Reddish brown and clear with a bit of off-white head. Light smoke notes, red berries, sarsaparilla on the Jose. Sweet smokyvtaste with bitterness coming in to fill the gaps. Nice balance in the finish. Medium body with carbonation on the low side. A decent rauchbier for sure.

500ml bottle bought from Smaczek, Leicester. Light gold, clear with a large white head. Sweet, skunky aroma, slightly floral aroma. Some lemon zest. Taste on the sweet side with a bitter and slightly astringent aftertaste. Medium body with some heavy carbonation. Passable lager.

Handpull cask at the Shire Horse, Kettering. Very light golden, almost straw, clear with a loose rocky white head. Enticing aroma of white grape, gooseberry, some pale malts. Sweet taste, light fruity flavours leading to a bitterness at the finish. Watery body with low carbonation. I quite enjoyed this, a little surprised by some of the lower rates.

Keg draught at the General, Rushden. Still got some of their Three Hills stock and Im taking advantage. Damn near black but actually very dark brown, a swirl of tan head. Aroma is strong salted caramel, pecan, hazelnut. Sweet, sweet taste with gooey caramel, praline, sugared nuts and treacle. A touch of bitterness at the end. Gooey body, thick with just enough carbonation. Light salted popcorn in the aftertaste. So, so sorry to have lost this brewery.

Keg draught at the General, Rushden. Light gold, hazy with a small film of white head and a fair bit of lacing. Light lemony aroma, some icing sugar, some orchard fruit. Sweet taste lets the malt base shine through, so a lot of vanilla, herbal lemon balm, gentle notes of pear. Medium body, carbonation on the low side. It's subtlety is its charm.
