Started on Ratebeer in 2002. Never a huge ticker but have become more interested in trying smaller sample sizes of more beers lately. Current tasting group meets bi-monthly: tfontana, Airforcehops (CLW) and Chalumeaux, occasionally with AdamChandler and Jow. Oh man, what a series. Love, love, love the nose here. The adjuncts are there, but not overdone and the sour cultures are poignant but not too acidic. Oak in the very background, but no overt tannin or strong wood character. Just a fruity, juicy, tart, rich BA sour in a compact, approachable vessel.
More oak and chardonnay in the flavor than the nose. Notes of rich, juicy peach alternate with buttery, vanilla-rich oak and Chardonnay character. Tartness up front and through the middle, but rounding/tapering heavily and leaving a soft, heavy vanilla character. Almost would guess there is vanilla added. Very malty, too. This is a great compromise between kettle sours and full-on sour BA beers. Sadly the state of beer needs something like this to reenergize real sours, as BA sours are just completely dead in the water.
