wheresthepath Profile - Brewver (Dev)

Can from Beer Merchants Tap, Hackney Wick. New brewery and a new region for me. Lightly hazed gold with a white head. Pine up front, lots of ginger, and some pink grapefruit coming through against a mellow malt background. Less bitter than many IPAs. Less aggressive too; slips down very easily and was a great match for my tandoori chicken. Enjoyed it.

Bottle from Mleczko, Reading. Dark brown with a beige head. There's an initial flavour of kvass - rye bread, dark brown sugar, a touch of spice. Nice-ish flavour, but horribly sweet. However, you're then hit with a bitter and slightly sour taste of cardboard and metal with hints of that disgusting chicory-based fake coffee stuff - all of which is not only nasty, but clashes horribly with the sweet kvass-like start. The finish is sweet and syrupy yet still with the harsh metallic bitterness. Don't know quite what they're trying to do here, but overall this is grim (apart from the looks, which keep the score much higher than it should really be). Who actually buys this stuff (other than beer raters desperate for another tick of course 🤪)?

Can from Utobeer, Borough Market, London. My first NSW rate on Brewer (I did have one on Ratebeer, but it seems Brewer had that beer down as being brewed elsewhere, so I've had to "retake" the state!). It's a lightly hazed yellowy-gold brew with a large but diminishing white head and a middling fizz. Tastes of sweet lime (yum!) with touches of lemon, melon and biscuit, and a herbal note in the lightly bitter finish. It's a tad thin and watery, but that actually works ok with the flavours and leaves it being rather drinkable and refreshing. This'd be really good on a hot day. Definitely one of the better non alcoholic brews I've had - I rather enjoyed it.

Can that my daughter bought me from M&S for Father's Day - cheers Em. Dark brown with a beige head. Looks thick on pouring and has a good rich, smooth mouthfeel. There's chocolate syrup up front, with dark caramel coming through, but their sweetness is well balanced by the toasty notes of the stout behind. There's a touch of raisin and a little caramelised white chocolate too. No cookie though. I have to say, I often find flavoured stouts to be quite artificial-tasting, but this one tastes like the real deal. Good stuff, really enjoyed this, a great New Year's beer!

Clear. Alcohol noticeable on the aroma, less so in the taste. Dryish, with some nut, vanilla, cream and chalk followed by a umami soy sauce taste. Intriguing and enjoyable whilst drinking but left an odd and slightly unpleasant aftertaste.

My first saké, so didn't really know what to expect. Picked it up from Sainsbury's on my way out on a 15 mile morning bimble. Drank it mid morning tramp style, crashed on a bench in the middle of a Chilterns village. With a Nutrigrain Elevenses cereal bar. It (the sake, not the cereal bar) was clear with just a hint of yellow. It tasted quite boozy for the 5% - would have guessed it was stronger than that. There's a touch of sparkling Chardonnay up front. Then it becomes sweet and fruity - rhubarb especially - with vanilla custard and a little boiled rice. It went down surprisingly well - I might be up for more sakes on walks if they weren’t so damnably expensive!
