On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours a hazy pale straw with a small scummy almost white head and excellent lacing. There’s citrus and tropical fruit in the aroma. In the mouth it is slightly sweet but with hints of sharpness. Floral hops to the fore in the flavour plus tropical fruits, pine and bitter oranges. Hints of spice lead to a dry finish. This is decent.

On tap at Hops, Crewe (as Chouffe Session). Pours a hazy golden amber with a sizable frothy almost white head and good lacing. There’s malts and yeast in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet though slightly watery with the usual Belgian flavours of banana, yeast and bubblegum. Also tropical fruits and later on hints of honey, pine and coriander leading to a slightly dry finish. This is rather nice – the low strength makes it more swiggable !

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours dark ruby with a sizable foamy off-white head and excellent lacing. There’s malts and toffee in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet with an abundance of malts, plus caramel, treacle and dried fruit with hints of nuts and chocolate. Finish is slightly fruity. This is decent without being outstanding.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a minimal frothy almost white head. Aroma is mainly floral hops plus traces of cabbage (in a good way) and smoke. In the mouth there is a brief initial burst of sweetness before that is swamped by intense bitter hoppiness. The hops do subside gradually allowing some other trace flavours through later – grains, honey and tropical fruit. Finish is decidedly dry. This is very good – what a hoppy beer should taste like. Also, I would class this as a session IPA, not a golden ale.

Cask at Sun, Stafford. Pours golden amber with a small scummy off-white head but excellent lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma together with traces of floral hops and honey. In the mouth it is slightly bitter with a smooth and creamy texture. Flavour has mixed hops, corn and honey with hints of alcoholic strength and lucozade coming though later leading to a dry finish. This is decent – an old school premium bitter.

Cask at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours golden brown with a sizable foamy off-white head. The aroma has malts and honey. In the mouth it varies between slightly bitter and sweet with flavour of mixed hops, malts and corn. Plus hints of caramel, nuts and lucozade coming later. Bitterness wins out in the slightly dry finish. This is reasonable.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours a hazy dark brown with a small foamy cream head. Not much of an aroma – just vague maltiness. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying bitterness and a watery texture. Flavour has malts and dried fruits with traces of vanilla and figs coming later. Finish is slightly dry. This is reasonable enough – though somewhat anonymous.

Cask at Bird In Hand, Stafford. Pours dark chestnut with a sizable foamy cream head and good lacing. The aroma has roasted malts and dark fruits plus a hint of honey. In the mouth it is sweet with a smooth and creamy texture. Malts and traditional hops to the fore plus some hints of chocolate and berry fruits. Finish is slightly fruity. This is decent and has plenty of flavour. PS the “badger” image on the pump clip looks more like a raccoon to me !
