Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark (almost very dark) reddish-brown with minimal cream head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma, plus traces of honey and herbs. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying bitterness and a decidedly watery texture. Flavour is smokey malts and dark fruits with hints of humbug sweets and hops coming through later. Slight dryness in the finish. This is reasonable – if a bit thin.

Bottle at Hops, Crewe. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a small foamy almost white head. There’s a sweet boozy aroma of honey, coriander and yeast. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying sharpness, and a creamy almost cloying texture. Flavour has malts, honey, orange peel and hints of pear with traces of banana bread and herbs coming later leading to a quite spicy finish. This is pretty d*mn good – and dangerously drinkable !

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s floral hops and oranges in the aroma. In the mouth it is somewhat bitter from the start, but this increases to dominate. A little underlying sweetness at the start as well, with flavour of floral hops, marmalade and tangerine, plus a hint of grapefruit later on. Finish is decidedly bitter. This is a decent IPA.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a hazy golden yellow with minimal off-white head and excellent lacing. There’s malts and oranges in the aroma, with just a hint of floral hops. In the mouth t is divided between sweet top and bitter underneath and a creamy texture. Flavour has floral hops, a mountain of citrus and grapefruit. Finish is bitter and dreadfully sticky – I needed to drink a different beer to wash my mouth out ! Reasonable enough until the dreadful finish.

On tap at That Beer Place, Chester. Pours a hazy pale straw with a sizable frothy white head, excellent lacing and fairly high carbonation. The aroma has continental hops and citrus. In the mouth it is sweet and somewhat tart with a slightly creamy texture. Citrus to the fore in the flavour assisted by melon, lemon and traces of lime and tangerine later. Tartness lasts into a slightly dry finish. This is quite nice – certainly refreshing on a hot summer day.
