6.5/10 Appearance 9 Aroma 5 Flavor 7.5 Texture 6 Overall 6
Cask at That Beer Place, Chester. Pours golden amber with minimal almost white head and excellent lacing. Mainly malts in the aroma plus some hints of floral hops. In the mouth it is quite bitter but with a touch of sweetness underneath. Flavour has mixed hops, malts, and hints of spice and pine with oranges and bread crusts becoming evident later. Bitterness lasts into the finish. It’s a decent old style pale ale.

Cask at Square Bottle, Chester. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a somewhat frothy almost white head and good lacing. Mainly malts in the aroma plus some hints of floral hops. In the mouth it is sweet, with a decidedly creamy texture and a little underlying bitterness. Flavour has mixed hops, marmalade and grapefruit with traces of honey and mango coming later leading to a fruity finish. It’s not bad at all – though I’m not sure it’s an IPA.

Cask at Mount Inn, Chester. Right, lets get one thing straight from the start. This is a Light Mild not a dark Mild (implied by CAMRA) or a “chestnut ale” or “amber ale” (described by brewery) or even a “bitter / ordinary” as previously recorded by Brewver. Anyway, it pours golden yellow with a small scummy off-white head and good lacing. There’s malts and summer fruits in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with a touch of bitterness too. Flavour is malts and marmalade with hints of barley sugar and berry fruits coming later leading to a fruity finish. This is decent.

Cask at Cornerhouse, Chester. Pours a dark (almost very dark) reddish-brown with a medium sized foamy cream head. The aroma is mainly roasted malts with hints of lactose and honey. In the mouth it is sweet and tangy with a creamy texture. Flavour has roasted malts, floral hops and some traces of citrus with dark fruits and cherries surfacing later. Sweetness lasts into the slightly fruity finish. This is excellent – exactly how a stout should be !
