Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours almost black with a small tan head and good lacing. Malts dominate what little aroma there is – plus hints of chocolate and parkin. Malts again to the fore in the mouth where there is appreciable bitterness and a creamy texture. Flavour is augmented by liquorice, molasses and cola plus traces of honey and treacle. This both decent (full flavoured and enjoyable) and also somewhat disappointing. I was expecting something really special from a combination of Thornbridge, Burton Union and my favourite beer style.

Cask at Brunswick, Derby. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. Only a vague aroma – hints of citrus and floral hops. In the mouth it is sweet and juicy with a creamy texture, though slightly watery too. Flavour has floral hops and malts with melon and mango coming through later leading to a slightly dry finish. This is reasonable though somewhat anonymous.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with minimal scummy almost white head and good lacing. There’s malts, pine and nuts in the aroma plus traces of honey. In the mouth in fluctuates between malty sweetness and bitterness of alcoholic strength with a creamy / cloying texture. Flavour also has marmalade and autumn fruits with hints of lemon juice. Finish is quite dry. This is decent enough – if a bit rough.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a cloudy pale straw with minimal scummy off-white head. Citrus to the fore in the aroma, alongside mango and kiwi. In the mouth it varies between sweet and sharp with a creamy, almost cloying, texture. Flavour has citrus, grapefruit and floral hops. Sharpness wins out in the somewhat sticky finish. This is reasonable I suppose.

Cask at Victoria, Derby. Pours a hazy “bitter brown” with minimal off-white head. There’s malts and stonefruits in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with s little underlying bitterness and a slightly watery texture. Flavour has malts, mixed hops and autumn fruits with traces of tangerine and honey later leading to a slightly fruity finish. This is reasonable though not particularly exciting.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a small scummy almost white head and good lacing. There’s a zesty aroma with lemon and traces of floral hops. In the mouth it is both bitter and sweet simultaneously with flavours of grapefruit, floral hops and pine. Later there are hints of lemon, pineapple and spice leading to a somewhat dry finish. This is decent – much better than the usual murkfest this brewer supplies !
